BuildCard details

The Commander

Rocksteady can't be blocked by more than one creature.

Boars you control can't be blocked by more than one creature.

Forestcycling {2} ({2}, Discard this card: Search your library for a Forest card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.)

Guide

Gameplan

Rocksteady is a mono-green stompy/voltron commander that wants to be huge and connect for big chunks of damage—since it can only be blocked by a single creature, pairing it with trample turns it into a near-unstoppable beater. Ramp out fast, pump and protect Rocksteady (or another evasive threat), and use Forestcycling to smooth your land drops while keeping a healthy card flow. You close games by swinging for commander damage or going wide with stompy threats.

Strengths

  • Built-in evasion plus trample lets a single huge swing deal lethal commander damage
  • Mono-green gives the best ramp and largest creatures, so reaching threatening sizes is easy
  • Forestcycling makes the commander flexible—turn an extra copy into a land when you don't need the body
  • Color identity keeps the manabase clean and immune to nonbasic-land hate

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green struggles with interaction—almost no counterspells or targeted removal beyond fight/Beast Within effects
  • Heavily reliant on the commander or one threat, so it's vulnerable to spot removal and tax effects
  • Single-creature blocking still loses to a single big or deathtouch blocker without trample
  • Boar synergy is a near-dead clause given how few playable Boars exist

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Cheap, recurring trample that converts Rocksteady's evasion into guaranteed face damage.
  • Berserk — Doubles Rocksteady's power and grants trample for a likely one-shot kill through a lone blocker.
  • Nylea, God of the Hunt — Repeatable trample for the whole team plus a pump outlet for excess mana.
  • Cultivate — Core ramp that fixes land drops while you also lean on Forestcycling for consistency.
  • Heroic Intervention — Cheap protection that shields your invested commander from board wipes and removal.
  • Garruk, Primal Hunter — Refills your hand off your big creatures and makes tokens to push extra damage.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the voltron plan with cheap, recurring buffs and protection—Shizo-style hexproof effects, Snakeskin Veil, and Lightning Greaves—so your investment sticks. Add the best green ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore, mana dorks) to deploy Rocksteady ahead of curve and hold up Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes as finishers. To raise the ceiling, include trample-granters and double-strike enablers like Berserk and Embercleave-adjacent green tools so a single connection ends a player on the spot.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Lethal commander damage from a pumped, trampling Rocksteady
  • ▸Overrun-style team buffs (Craterhoof Behemoth, Overwhelming Stampede) for a one-turn alpha strike
  • ▸Berserk or double-strike combat tricks turning one swing into a kill
  • ▸Grinding out the board with huge creatures and trample over chump blockers

Archetypes

  • Voltron — The single-blocker clause plus trample makes Rocksteady an ideal commander-damage threat to stack auras and equipment on.
  • Mono-Green Stompy — Ramp into oversized trampling creatures that the evasion clause helps push through clogged boards.
  • Tokens/Go-Wide — Green token producers let you flood the board and overwhelm while Rocksteady demands answers.
  • Tribal (Boar) — For a fun build, Rocksteady extends his evasion to all your Boars, supporting a niche creature-type theme.
