BuildCard details

The Commander

Partner with Bebop, Skull & Crossbones (When this creature enters, target player may put Bebop into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)

Trample

Whenever another nontoken creature you control enters, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Rocksteady turns every nontoken creature you cast into a free +1/+1 counter, so you flood the board with cheap and recursive creatures and pile counters onto a single threat (or spread them around). You ramp early, deploy a steady stream of bodies, then trample over the table with a counter-pumped beater or go wide with anthem effects.

Strengths

  • Mono-green consistency and access to the best ramp and creature toolbox in the format
  • Trample built in means counters translate directly into commander damage
  • Counter triggers reward flicker, recursion, and cheap creature spam without needing tokens
  • Partner with Bebop gives flexible deckbuilding if you splash blue

Weaknesses

  • Triggers only fire on nontoken creatures, so token strategies don't synergize
  • Counters do nothing if Rocksteady or your beater gets removed before connecting
  • Single-target counter placement can be slow and grindy in a vacuum
  • No evasion beyond trample and no inherent card advantage engine

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Doubles every +1/+1 counter Rocksteady's trigger places, accelerating your beaters.
  • Conclave Mentor — Adds counters and gains life each time a counter is placed, stacking with Rocksteady.
  • Cloudstone Curio — Bounce a cheap creature to recast it repeatedly, generating a counter each time it re-enters.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Caps off a wide board with massive trample for a one-shot kill.
  • Ezuri, Renegade Leader — Overrun-style trample pump and regeneration protects your creatures while pushing damage.
  • Inspiring Call — Draws a card per counter-bearing creature and protects your board from a wrath.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Branching Evolution, Doubling Season) and proliferate engines to multiply Rocksteady's output, plus cheap recursive creatures and flicker like Cloudstone Curio for repeatable triggers. Improve the mana base with fast ramp (Sol Ring, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) and add protection such as Heroic Intervention and Snakeskin Veil so a single removal spell can't blow you out.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Trample beatdown with a heavily countered Rocksteady or chosen threat
  • ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede alpha strike across a wide board
  • ▸Ezuri-style overrun effects converting counters into lethal evasive damage

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Rocksteady's trigger is a counter engine that scales with doublers and proliferate.
  • Voltron — Trample plus stacked counters lets a single creature deal lethal commander damage.
  • Blink/Flicker — Repeatedly re-entering nontoken creatures retriggers the counter ability.
  • Stompy/Creatures — A go-wide green creature deck naturally fuels constant ETB counter triggers.
