BuildCard details

The Commander

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay {R}{R}{R}. If you don't, tap Rohgahh and all creatures named Kobolds of Kher Keep, then an opponent gains control of them.

Creatures you control named Kobolds of Kher Keep get +2/+2.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with free 0/1 Kobolds of Kher Keep (and other Kobolds), use Rohgahh's anthem and other lords to turn them into a wide army, and convert that swarm into damage or sacrifice fodder. Each upkeep you pay {R}{R}{R} to keep control of your Kobolds, so you want red-heavy ramp and a fast, explosive plan. You win by overwhelming the table before the upkeep tax becomes a liability.

Strengths

  • Free creatures (Kobolds of Kher Keep, Crookshank Kobolds, Kobold Drill Sergeant, etc.) flood the board at zero mana, enabling explosive turns
  • Rohgahh's built-in +2/+2 anthem makes a fragile tribe into real threats
  • Cheap mana value bodies fuel aristocrats, convoke, and 'whenever a creature dies/enters' triggers extremely well
  • Rakdos gives premium removal, sacrifice payoffs, and aggressive token finishers

Weaknesses

  • The upkeep {R}{R}{R} tax can hand your whole Kobold army to an opponent if you stumble on red mana
  • Kobolds are 0/1 (or 2/3 with the anthem) and die to any board wipe, instantly collapsing the deck
  • Heavily reliant on the commander and a few lords—removal-heavy tables can grind you out
  • Color identity locks you out of green ramp and white protection, straining the red-pip requirement

Key Cards

  • Kobolds of Kher Keep — The only card Rohgahh buffs by name and a free creature that benefits from his anthem—it's the literal core of the deck.
  • Crookshank Kobolds — Another free Kobold that fills the board for combo, aristocrats, and go-wide attacks at zero cost.
  • Skullclamp — Turns your zero-cost 0/1 Kobolds into a relentless card-draw engine—equip, sacrifice, draw two, repeat.
  • Impact Tremors — Each free Kobold pings every opponent on entry, converting your swarm into reliable, removal-proof damage.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Two damage to each opponent per token makes flooding the board a one-card kill engine.
  • Goblin Bombardment — A free sacrifice outlet that turns a board of Kobolds into direct damage and combos with token doublers.

Upgrade Path

Lean into payoffs that don't require combat: add Skullclamp, Purphoros, Impact Tremors, and Bastion of Remembrance so each free Kobold matters even through wraths. Shore up the {R}{R}{R} upkeep with red rocks and rituals (Jeska's Will, treasures) and add token doublers like Anointed Procession-style red effects (Mirror March) plus Coat of Arms for explosive finishes. Round out with strong Rakdos interaction—Terminate, Deflecting Swat—to protect the swarm and the commander.
