The Commander

Vigilance, trample

{2}, {T}: Exile another target creature. Return that card to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.

Guide

Gameplan

Roon is a Bant blink engine: each turn you tap Roon to flicker a creature, re-triggering enter-the-battlefield effects to generate value, ramp, card advantage, and removal via tempo. You grind incremental advantage, snowball a board of ETB value creatures, then convert that into a lethal swing or a combo finish.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, hard-to-stop ETB engine right from the command zone
  • Can flicker your own creatures for value or opponents' creatures to blank attacks/abilities
  • Bant has the deepest pool of blink payloads, ramp, and protection
  • Doubles as removal by exiling enemy attackers/blockers in combat (until end step)
  • Self-sufficient value engine that doesn't strand you if Roon gets countered

Weaknesses

  • Slow, mana-hungry, and telegraphed—activation costs {2} plus needs Roon to survive a turn
  • Heavily commander-dependent; repeated removal severely hampers the engine
  • Sorcery-speed value at instant cost can be too grindy against fast combo decks
  • Limited interaction outside of board presence and color staples
  • Flicker tricks help opponents' creatures too if you exile them (they return)

Key Cards

  • Eternal Witness — Recurs any card from your graveyard every time you blink it, fueling an endless value loop.
  • Sun Titan — Repeatedly reanimates cheap permanents on each flicker, building inevitability.
  • Mulldrifter — Turns every Roon activation into two cards, the quintessential blink payoff.
  • Deadeye Navigator — Soulbond gives a second, untap-free blink outlet that combos with mana-positive ETB creatures.
  • Peregrine Drake — Untaps lands for free mana, enabling infinite mana loops with Deadeye Navigator.
  • Restoration Angel — Flash blink that protects key creatures and supplies extra ETB value at instant speed.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve with cheap, high-impact ETB creatures and fast ramp (Sol Ring, Cultivate, Smothering Tithe) so Roon comes down protected and active early. Add a compact combo line like Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake/Palinchron with Craterhoof or a Walking Ballista mana sink, plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Swiftfoot Boots. Trim purely durdly ETB cards for efficient interaction (Cyclonic Rift, Swords to Plowshares) and flicker-flexible threats like Agent of Treachery.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite mana via Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake/Palinchron into a mana sink or game-ending ETB
  • ▸Blinking a payoff like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes for a token/creature alpha strike
  • ▸Grinding insurmountable card advantage and beating down with vigilant, trampling value creatures
  • ▸Repeated ETB removal (Agent of Treachery, Woodfall Primus) to lock opponents out

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — Roon's activated ability is a built-in, repeatable flicker engine that rewards ETB-heavy creature suites.
  • Value Midrange — Grinds card and board advantage with ramp, recursion, and incremental ETB triggers.
  • Combo — Deadeye Navigator plus mana-positive ETB creatures (Palinchron, Peregrine Drake) enables infinite mana and wins.
  • Control — Exiling attackers, blinking removal creatures, and reusing counters/wraths lets Roon play a controlling game.
