The Commander

You may choose not to untap Rubinia Soulsinger during your untap step.

{T}: Gain control of target creature for as long as you control Rubinia Soulsinger and Rubinia Soulsinger remains tapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Rubinia is a Bant control-stealer who taps to steal opponents' best creatures one at a time, accumulating an army while leaving your rivals defenseless. Early turns build mana and protection, then you tap Rubinia to grab a threat and keep her tapped to hold it. You leverage stolen creatures, blink/untap tricks, and sacrifice outlets to make the thefts permanent or repeatable, eventually overwhelming the table.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, color-fixing-free creature theft that doubles as removal and ramp in one ability
  • Bant gives access to the format's best protection, blink, and untap effects
  • Stolen creatures can be sacrificed or blinked to keep them permanently
  • Strong political tool—you can leverage threats against the biggest board

Weaknesses

  • Theft ends the moment Rubinia dies, untaps, or leaves play, so she's a removal magnet
  • Only one creature locked at a time unless you add untap/blink support
  • Slow and durdly without protection; can fall behind fast combo/storm decks
  • Boardwipes punish a deck built around borrowed creatures

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps Rubinia so she can steal a second creature while keeping the first locked under her tap.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps her on combat damage and protects against the green/black removal that ends thefts.
  • Sundial of the Infinite — Lets you end the turn to keep a stolen creature even after Rubinia untaps, or dodge 'until end of turn' losses.
  • Conjurer's Closet — Blink a creature Rubinia stole to take permanent ownership while freeing her to grab another.
  • Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste keep Rubinia alive so your borrowed army doesn't snap back to its owners.
  • Goreclaw, Terror of Qinala — Caretaker-style untappers and cost reducers help, but Goreclaw-type payoffs let stolen fatties hit immediately—pair with sac/blink to keep them.

Upgrade Path

Add untap enablers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Seedborn Muse, Magewright's Stone) so Rubinia can steal every turn while holding prior targets, and sac/blink outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Conjurer's Closet, Felidar Guardian) to make thefts permanent. Prioritize protection—Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention—since Rubinia is a removal magnet, and round out with broader theft like Bribery and Agent of Treachery. Push the curve down with fast mana (Sol Ring, signets) so you steal a threat by turn 5 and snowball from there.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beat down with an army of stolen creatures plus your own board
  • ▸Sacrifice borrowed threats to a Goblin Bombardment / Ashnod's Altar engine for value and reach
  • ▸Steal key combo or finisher pieces to assemble your own kill
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources until your accumulated steals overwhelm the table

Archetypes

  • Control — Rubinia neutralizes the strongest threat each turn while you grind out card and board advantage.
  • Theft/Steal — Her ability is the centerpiece of a 'take everything' shell with Mind Control effects and untap engines.
  • Blink — Flickering stolen creatures converts temporary control into permanent ownership and resets ETBs.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets let you permanently exile opponents' best creatures via your borrowed bodies.
