The Commander

Whenever Rufus Shinra attacks, if you don't control a creature named Darkstar, create Darkstar, a legendary 2/2 white and black Dog creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Rufus Shinra is a cheap BW aggro/midrange commander that spits out a free Darkstar dog every combat, giving you a recurring body to attack, block, or sacrifice. Curve out, swing early to bank a Darkstar, then convert the steady stream of tokens into damage or sacrifice value while grinding the board with removal and recursion. You win by going wide, applying Voltron-style pressure, or looping the token through aristocrats payoffs.

Strengths

  • Generates free value bodies every turn just by attacking, with no card or mana cost
  • Low mana value (3) means easy early deployment and cheap recasts after removal
  • Steady token stream fuels aristocrats, convoke, and go-wide strategies
  • BW gives access to the best removal, recursion, and lifegain in the format

Weaknesses

  • Only makes one Darkstar at a time and only when attacking, so the engine is slow without support
  • Darkstar being legendary caps you at a single token unless you copy or relocate it
  • Relies on Rufus surviving and connecting in combat, vulnerable to spot removal and fog
  • No evasion or protection built in, so a single blocker can stall the trigger value
  • Lacks ramp or card draw on its own; needs the deck to supply both

Key Cards

  • Skullclamp — Turns each sacrificed Darkstar (and other 2/2 tokens) into two cards, fixing the deck's biggest weakness.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles token creation so a non-legendary token engine alongside Darkstar floods the board fast.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Each dying Darkstar makes a Treasure, ramping you and feeding sacrifice loops.
  • Bastion of Remembrance — Aristocrats payoff that drains opponents every time a creature you control dies, including looped tokens.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Gives Rufus evasion and protection so attacks reliably land and ramp you back to untapped.
  • Reconnaissance — Lets Rufus declare an attack to trigger Darkstar, then pull back before damage, generating value risk-free.

Upgrade Path

Add card-draw engines (Skullclamp, Phyrexian Arena, Welcoming Vampire) and sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar) so the Darkstar stream stops being a slow trickle. Layer in token doublers and aristocrats payoffs to scale the engine, plus evasion/protection for Rufus to guarantee triggers. For higher power, lean into a tight aristocrats combo with Pitiless Plunderer plus a free sac outlet and a drain payoff for an explosive finish.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with tokens behind anthems like Intangible Virtue and finishing with a Craterhoof-style overrun or Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Bastion of Remembrance looping the token
  • ▸Commander damage by suiting up Rufus with Voltron equipment and evasion
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with relentless value and reanimation until they have no answers

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — The recurring Darkstar token is endless fodder for sacrifice outlets and death-trigger payoffs.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Rufus seeds a token theme that BW anthems and doublers turn into a lethal board.
  • Midrange Aggro — A cheap commander that adds a body each combat lets you grind out attrition wars.
  • Voltron — Equipment and auras on Rufus let him pressure life totals while still spawning chump-proof Darkstars.
