BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Whenever Rulik Mons attacks, look at the top card of your library. If it's a land card, you may put it onto the battlefield tapped. If you didn't put a card onto the battlefield this way, create a 1/1 red Goblin creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Attack with Rulik Mons every turn to either ramp a land into play or spawn a Goblin token, then leverage those triggers with landfall payoffs and Goblin tribal synergies. You snowball a wide board while accelerating your mana, eventually closing with a swarm of Goblins or a landfall-fueled beatdown. Rebuying the attack trigger and keeping Rulik alive is the core engine.

Strengths

  • Built-in card/board advantage every combat with no extra mana investment
  • Hybrid landfall ramp and token generation gives flexible payoff lines
  • Menace makes Rulik hard to block and keeps the engine attacking
  • Cheap four-mana commander that's easy to recast and abuse with extra combats

Weaknesses

  • Engine relies on Rulik connecting/attacking, so removal and stax shut it down
  • Triggers are single-instance per attack unless you add extra-combat or copy effects
  • Top-of-library is random—no inherent way to guarantee land vs. token without manipulation
  • Token half is just 1/1 vanilla bodies without anthems or sacrifice outlets

Key Cards

  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Turns the trickle of Goblin tokens into an explosive army for a wide finish.
  • Aggravated Assault — Untaps for extra combats, re-triggering Rulik's attack ability multiple times per turn.
  • Scute Swarm — A premier landfall payoff that snowballs alongside Rulik's land-into-play trigger.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Converts every Goblin token into direct damage, providing reach and a noncombat win.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet that turns tokens into damage and protects against board wipes.
  • Sword of the Animist — Stacks more land drops on Rulik's attacks while buffing and protecting him.

Upgrade Path

Add top-deck manipulation (Sylvan Library, Mirri's Guile, Scroll Rack) so you choose lands versus tokens, plus extra-combat enablers like Aggravated Assault and Combat Celebrant to multiply triggers. Layer in payoffs that scale—Purphoros, Impact Tremors, Craterhoof Behemoth—and protect Rulik with hexproof gear or Lightning Greaves. Tighten the mana with fast ramp and a strong landfall package to convert the engine into faster, more resilient kills.
