BuildCard details

The Commander

First strike, vigilance, haste

Start your engines! (If you have no speed, it starts at 1. It increases once on each of your turns when an opponent loses life. Max speed is 4.)

Other creatures you control get +X/+0, where X is your speed.

Noncreature spells you cast cost {X} less to cast, where X is your speed.

Guide

Gameplan

Samut is an aggressive Naya commander that snowballs around the new Speed mechanic. You curve out with creatures, deal opponent damage to ramp your speed to 4, then turn sideways with a +4/+0 anthem while your noncreature spells cost {4} less. The deck wants to apply pressure early, get speed maxed by midgame, and close fast before the table stabilizes.

Strengths

  • Powerful anthem effect that scales your whole board up to +4/+0 for free
  • Built-in haste, first strike, and vigilance make Samut an immediate threat and attacker
  • Speed-based cost reduction makes burn, equipment, and ramp dirt cheap once maxed
  • Naya colors give access to the best creatures, removal, and ramp in aggro

Weaknesses

  • Speed only increases once per turn and requires opponents to lose life, so it ramps slowly without proactive damage
  • Six mana commander is slow to deploy and the anthem disappears if Samut is removed
  • Board wipes are devastating since the deck commits heavily to the battlefield
  • Lacks card advantage engines natively; can run out of gas after a stalled attack
  • Vulnerable to fog effects, lifegain, and go-wide blockers that blunt the alpha strike

Key Cards

  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Stacks with Samut's anthem to convert a wide board into a one-shot kill.
  • Skullclamp — Cheap card draw engine that becomes nearly free with speed, refueling go-wide aggro.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Pings opponents for token triggers, advancing your speed while adding reach damage.
  • Krenko, Mob Boss — Floods the board with bodies that all gain the +X/+0 anthem for explosive attacks.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your committed board from wraths and targeted removal at near-zero cost when fast.
  • Embercleave — Cost-reduced even further by speed, turning any attacker into a lethal threat.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient haste enablers and token producers (Hellrider, Goblin Bombardment, Beastmaster Ascension) so you reliably hit max speed and convert it to lethal. Improve mana with fast rocks and untapped Naya duals, and lean on protection like Heroic Intervention and Boros Charm to survive wraths. For higher power, include a finisher line such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes plus repeatable card draw through Skullclamp and Esper Sentinel-style taxers to avoid running out of gas.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with an anthem-buffed board, often finished by Craterhoof Behemoth
  • ▸Commander damage via Samut wearing Embercleave or other equipment
  • ▸Death by a thousand cuts from token swarms ramped to max speed
  • ▸Direct burn and Purphoros-style ping damage closing out depleted opponents

Archetypes

  • Go-Wide Tokens — The +X/+0 anthem multiplies value across many small creatures for a massive swing.
  • Aggro/Beatdown — Haste and the anthem let you pressure life totals immediately and snowball speed.
  • Voltron-lite — First strike, vigilance, and haste plus cheap equipment make Samut a fast solo threat.
  • Burn/Spellslinger — Cost reduction on noncreature spells supports a burn shell that also fuels speed.
