The Commander

Trample

At the beginning of combat on your turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Savanti Romero. Then you draw X cards and lose X life, where X is the number of counters on Savanti Romero.

Guide

Gameplan

Drop Savanti early, attack each turn to stack +1/+1 counters and refill your hand with explosive card draw while paying the life cost. Convert that card advantage into a grindy mono-black engine that out-resources the table, then close with a big tramping commander or a black finisher. Lifegain and life-as-resource payoffs turn the drawback into an asset.

Strengths

  • Massive snowballing card advantage that quickly outpaces every opponent
  • Trample plus stacking counters makes it a real beater and potential commander-damage threat
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion to support the engine
  • Life loss synergizes with aristocrats, life-as-resource, and pain-payoff strategies

Weaknesses

  • The life loss is exponential and can quickly kill you if left unchecked
  • Heavily commander-dependent; removal stalls your whole draw engine
  • No built-in evasion beyond trample, so it can be chump-blocked or stalled by big walls
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and flying threats outside of edicts

Key Cards

  • Necropotence — Doubles down on the life-for-cards plan and is trivial to support alongside the commander.
  • Greed — Repeatable card draw that pairs with the deck's need to convert life and mana into gas.
  • Vilis, Broker of Blood — Turns all that incidental life loss into even more cards while threatening the table.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Banks the life you pay back and offers a 50-damage kill once you draw enough.
  • Bloodchief Ascension — Punishes the table for your life loss and can ramp into a Mindcrank-style mill kill.
  • Hardened Scales — Accelerates the counter stacking so you draw more cards faster each combat.
  • Whip of Erebos — Lifelink on your team offsets the brutal life payments and enables resilient attacks.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Mana Crypt, Jet Medallion) to deploy Savanti early and keep gas flowing, plus lifegain like Whip of Erebos and Pontiff of Blight effects to survive the escalating life loss. Lean into a dedicated win condition such as Aetherflux Reservoir or a Bolas's Citadel line so your card advantage actually closes the game. Round out with premium removal and recursion (Toxic Deluge, Reanimate, Feldon-style loops not in color—use Phyrexian Reclamation) to protect and rebuy your engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a counter-pumped, trampling Savanti
  • ▸Out-drawing the table and grinding out value with overwhelming card advantage
  • ▸Aetherflux Reservoir storming off after banking gained life
  • ▸Aristocrats/drain finishers like Blood Artist plus Bloodchief Ascension

Archetypes

  • Card Advantage Engine — The commander is one of the best repeatable draw engines in mono-black, fueling any value plan.
  • Aristocrats — Life loss and a sacrifice-friendly color shell turn the drawback into a payoff with drain effects.
  • Voltron — Stacking +1/+1 counters and trample let Savanti close games with commander damage.
  • Life-as-Resource Combo — Pairs naturally with Aetherflux Reservoir, Necropotence, and life-payment payoffs for explosive turns.
