BuildCard details

The Commander

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

When Scarlet Spider enters, you may discard a card. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on him.

Mayhem {B/R} (You may cast this card from your graveyard for {B/R} if you discarded it this turn. Timing rules still apply.)

Guide

Gameplan

Drop Kaine on turn 2, discard a card to grow him, and start swinging with menace while leaning on Mayhem to recast him cheaply after he dies or gets bounced. He's a resilient, low-cost aggro threat that doubles as a discard outlet, so you go fast with cheap evasive beaters and reward the cards you ditch via reanimation, madness, and graveyard payoffs.

Strengths

  • Two-mana evasive commander that snowballs with a +1/+1 counter and is hard to block thanks to menace
  • Mayhem makes him cheap to recast from the graveyard, so removal barely slows you down
  • Built-in discard outlet that fuels madness, reanimation, and 'cards in graveyard' strategies
  • Aggressive, color-efficient BR curve punishes greedy multiplayer pods early

Weaknesses

  • Small base body that needs counters/equipment to matter and dies to any spot removal
  • Single evasive threat strategy folds to fog, board wipes, and lifegain pods
  • No card advantage engine baked in beyond the discard, so it can run out of gas
  • Two-color identity means no white protection or blue interaction to defend the gameplan

Key Cards

  • Anje's Ravager — Turns combat damage into mass discard you can refill via Mayhem and madness, fixing the deck's card-flow problem.
  • Faithless Looting — Cheap discard-and-draw that fills the yard and enables Mayhem on the cards you pitch.
  • Reassembling Skeleton — A recurring sacrifice/discard fodder body that pairs perfectly with aristocrats and counter payoffs.
  • The Reaver Cleaver — Cheap equipment that rewards Kaine's evasion with a Treasure every combat to ramp into bigger threats.
  • Ozolith, the Shattered Spire — Doubles down on Kaine's counter theme and preserves counters when he dies and returns via Mayhem.

Upgrade Path

Tighten the curve with more one- and two-mana evasive threats and efficient equipment (Lightning Greaves, Bonesplitter, Embercleave) so Kaine connects every turn. Add stronger card engines and madness payoffs (Bone Miser, Containment Construct, Glint-Horn Buccaneer) plus reliable reanimation targets to convert pitched cards into value. Round out with quality interaction (Deadly Rollick, Terminate, Bedevil) and a couple of redundant drain/burn finishers so a single board wipe doesn't end the game.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage and menace beatdown after stacking counters and equipment
  • ▸Wide aristocrats drains via repeated sacrifice and Blood Artist-style payoffs
  • ▸Reanimating a large threat early and racing with evasive aggression
  • ▸Treasure ramp into haymakers like an early big reanimation target or burn finisher

Archetypes

  • Aggro/Voltron — Menace plus counters and equipment makes Kaine a fast, evasive damage source you suit up.
  • Madness/Discard — His ETB and Mayhem reward filling the graveyard, synergizing with madness and discard-matters cards.
  • Aristocrats — Cheap recursion and discard fodder feed sacrifice loops with reliable drain payoffs.
  • Reanimator — Discarding fatties to Kaine and looting effects sets up cheap reanimation of bombs.
