The Commander

Whenever Sephiroth enters or attacks, you may sacrifice another creature. If you do, draw a card.

Whenever another creature dies, target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. If this is the fourth time this ability has resolved this turn, transform Sephiroth.

Flying

Super Nova — As this creature transforms into Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel, you get an emblem with "Whenever a creature dies, target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life."

Whenever Sephiroth attacks, you may sacrifice any number of other creatures. If you do, draw that many cards.

Guide

Gameplan

Sephiroth is a mono-black aristocrats engine: flood the board with cheap, expendable creatures, sacrifice them to draw cards off his attack/ETB triggers, and drain the table for life every time something dies. Hit four death triggers in a turn and he flips into One-Winged Angel, leaving behind an emblem that turns every future death into a permanent drain. You grind opponents out with incremental life loss while refilling your hand on the sacrifice engine.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage that doesn't require extra payoffs — you draw just by attacking and sacrificing
  • The Super Nova emblem makes your drain permanent and scaling, surviving board wipes and his own death
  • Cheap three-mana commander that's both an engine and an evasive flying threat
  • Mono-black gives access to the deepest tutor and recursion suite in the format

Weaknesses

  • Relies on a steady supply of fodder creatures; without bodies he's just a 4/4 flier
  • Single-target drain only hits one opponent at a time pre-flip, which is slow in 4-player pods
  • Color-locked into black means no enchantment/artifact removal flexibility
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate and removal that strands your recursion plan

Key Cards

  • Bitterblossom — Generates a steady stream of free fodder tokens every turn to feed sacrifices and death triggers.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Turns each sacrificed creature into Treasure, letting you recast and rebuild your fodder loops.
  • Blood Artist — Stacks additional drain on every death, accelerating the four-trigger transform and the kill clock.
  • Gravecrawler — Recurs itself cheaply for repeatable sacrifice fuel and easy death triggers.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet with mana that rapidly stacks death triggers toward Sephiroth's flip.
  • Skullclamp — Converts your dying tokens into a relentless card-draw engine alongside Sephiroth's own draw.

Upgrade Path

Add free sacrifice outlets (Carrion Feeder, Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar) and persist/undying engines like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed plus Murderous Redcap or Carrion Feeder for infinite drain combos. Tighten the curve with cheap tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble your engine faster, and run multiple drain payoffs (Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) so each death hits the whole table. Fast mana like Dark Ritual and a tuned removal package help you stabilize and flip Sephiroth ahead of schedule.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Incremental life drain via death triggers and the Super Nova emblem grinding the table out
  • ▸Infinite or near-infinite aristocrats loops (e.g. persist creature + free sac outlet + drain payoff)
  • ▸Beating down with the evasive 8/8 flying One-Winged Angel backed by card advantage

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — His death triggers, sacrifice draw, and drain emblem are the textbook aristocrats payoff package.
  • Tokens — Token swarms provide endless free fodder for his sacrifice and death-trigger engine.
  • Reanimator — Mono-black recursion lets you sacrifice big bodies and bring them back to repeat value.
  • Combo — Persist/aristocrat loops with free sac outlets and life-drain enablers can close games instantly.
