BuildCard details

The Commander

Jenova Cells — Whenever Sephiroth attacks, you may put a cell counter on target creature. Until end of turn, each modified creature you control has base power and toughness 7/5. (Equipment, Auras you control, and counters are modifications.)

The Reunion — {3}, Sacrifice a modified creature: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

Guide

Gameplan

Sephiroth is a midrange aggro Boros commander built around the 'modified' keyword: load up creatures with counters, Equipment, and Auras, then attack and use Jenova Cells to push a creature to 7/5 (or larger if it already exceeds that) while turning your whole board into 7/5 beaters for the turn. You assemble a wide, modified board, swing for huge damage, and use The Reunion to keep recurring Sephiroth from the yard for repeated alpha strikes.

Strengths

  • Commander grants a board-wide power anthem on every attack, enabling explosive turns out of nowhere
  • Built-in recursion (The Reunion) makes him resilient to removal and lets you turn a dying modified creature into a fresh threat
  • Counters from any source (cell counters, +1/+1 counters, charge counters) all count as modifications, so synergies are extremely broad
  • Boros has deep Equipment, Auras, and go-wide token support to keep creatures 'modified'

Weaknesses

  • The 7/5 buff is a base P/T set, so it can actually shrink your already-large creatures
  • Needs creatures to be modified to benefit, so a board wipe or artifact/enchantment removal can blank the ability
  • Red/white lacks card draw and ramp, so you can run out of gas in longer games
  • Color identity limits access to black's tutors and recursion despite the aristocrats-flavored Reunion ability
  • Relies on combat damage, making it weak against fogs, mass blockers, and lifegain pillowfort decks

Key Cards

  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Equipment instantly modifies a creature, adds protection and value, and stacks on top of the 7/5 buff for huge swings.
  • Hardened Scales — Amplifies every counter you place, making cell counters and your other counter sources far more impactful.
  • Ardenn, Free Adept — Moves Equipment and Auras around to spread modifications across multiple attackers each turn.
  • The Ozolith — Banks counters when modified creatures die or get sacrificed to The Reunion, preserving your investment.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Flash in Auras and Equipment at instant speed to modify creatures and ambush blockers or dodge removal.
  • Skullclamp — Equipping a token modifies it and refuels your hand when small creatures die, solving Boros's card draw problem.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient cheap Equipment (Sword of the Animist, Lightning Greaves) and counter doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution) to maximize modifications and the 7/5 anthem. Shore up Boros's weaknesses with card advantage (Esper Sentinel, Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek) and ramp (Smothering Tithe, mana rocks). Top-end haymakers like Aurelia, the Warleader for extra combats and protective pieces such as Teferi's Protection or Heroic Intervention turn good attacks into game-enders.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide board of 7/5 modified creatures
  • ▸Voltron damage through a single heavily-equipped attacker with evasion
  • ▸Recurring Sephiroth via The Reunion for repeated combat-step buffs
  • ▸Counter-doubling synergies creating oversized lethal threats

Archetypes

  • Counters / +1/+1 Synergy — Cell counters and any +1/+1 counters satisfy the modified condition, rewarding a dedicated counters package.
  • Voltron / Equipment — Loading Sephiroth or a single creature with Equipment and Auras lets the 7/5 floor and protection close games fast.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide Aggro — A wide board that's modified all flips to 7/5 on attack for lethal, overwhelming alpha strikes.
  • Aristocrats-lite — The Reunion's sacrifice clause and modified-creature deaths pair with death-trigger payoffs and recursion.
