BuildCard details

The Commander

When Setzer enters, create The Blackjack, a legendary 3/3 colorless Vehicle artifact token with flying and crew 2.

Whenever a Vehicle you control deals combat damage to a player, flip a coin.

Whenever you win a coin flip, create two tapped Treasure tokens.

Guide

Gameplan

Setzer turns combat into a casino: crew Vehicles, swing for damage, and flip coins to flood the board with Treasure that fuels explosive turns. Early on you're crewing The Blackjack and other Vehicles to connect, then converting coin-flip wins into ramp and card advantage to deploy big threats or chain into a finisher. You win by snowballing Treasure into oversized attacks or burn.

Strengths

  • Built-in evasive Vehicle (The Blackjack) means Setzer immediately threatens combat damage triggers
  • Coin-flip payoffs generate huge Treasure ramp, enabling explosive curve-out turns
  • Vehicles dodge sorcery-speed wraths and don't die to summoning sickness issues, keeping pressure consistent
  • Treasure synergizes with sacrifice, artifact, and big-mana payoffs common in BR

Weaknesses

  • Coin flips are inherently variable—losing flips strands your whole engine
  • Vehicles need creatures to crew, so heavy board wipes can shut off your attacks
  • No built-in card advantage outside of Treasure; can run out of gas
  • Single Vehicle (The Blackjack) is fragile if you don't diversify your Vehicle base
  • BR has limited interaction with enchantments and stable flyers

Key Cards

  • Krark, the Thumbless — Doubles down on coin flips, letting you re-flip and copy spells to massively multiply Setzer's Treasure output.
  • Krark's Thumb — Lets you flip two coins and ignore one, nearly guaranteeing you win flips and bank Treasure.
  • Smothering Tithe — Stacks even more Treasure generation onto your coin-flip ramp for absurd mana acceleration.
  • Reckless Fireweaver — Turns every Treasure and artifact token into incremental burn, converting your ramp into a win condition.
  • Mishra's Self-Replicator — Cheap pilots and crew-friendly bodies keep your Vehicles attacking every turn to trigger flips.
  • Parhelion II — A massive evasive Vehicle that produces extra attackers and big damage to fuel coin flips.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into coin-flip multipliers (Krark, Krark's Thumb, Okaun & Zndrsplt-style enablers) and Treasure doublers (Smothering Tithe, Xorn, Ancient Copper Dragon) to make every flip overwhelming. Add a tight Vehicle package with reliable crewers and a payoff for artifacts entering, then cap it with a Treasure-sink finisher like Torment of Hailfire or an artifact-sacrifice combo. Improve mana consistency with fast rocks and dual lands so you can deploy Setzer and a Vehicle early to start flipping immediately.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swinging with evasive Vehicles like The Blackjack and Parhelion II for repeated chunks of damage
  • ▸Treasure-fueled X spells or big burn (Torment of Hailfire, Comet Storm) to drain the table
  • ▸Artifact-trigger pingers (Reckless Fireweaver, Disciple of the Vault) converting Treasure into lethal damage
  • ▸Going wide with Vehicles and overrun effects after ramping into a huge board

Archetypes

  • Vehicles/Aggro — Setzer's attack triggers reward an all-Vehicle attack squad swinging in repeatedly.
  • Coin Flip / Chaos — Krark and coin-flip multipliers turn Setzer's flips into a dedicated subtheme of value and variance.
  • Treasure Ramp / Artifacts — Coin-flip wins flood the board with Treasure, feeding artifact and big-mana payoffs.
  • Spellslinger Burn — Treasure ramp into X-burn and artifact-damage triggers closes games from the air or directly.
