BuildCard details

The Commander

Horses you control have haste. (They can attack and {T} as soon as they come under your control.)

Whenever Shadowfax attacks, you may put a creature card with lesser power from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.

Guide

Gameplan

Shadowfax is a go-wide aggro commander that cheats creatures into combat for free. Attack with Shadowfax, drop a fatty (or token-maker) directly into the red zone tapped and attacking, and snowball your board into a lethal alpha strike. The haste clause means every Horse you make is immediately a threat.

Strengths

  • Free creature drops every combat dodge sorcery-speed removal and tempo loss
  • Haste enablement makes recurring tokens and reanimated bodies instantly relevant
  • Aggressive RW curve closes games fast before slower decks set up
  • Synergizes with attack-trigger and combat-damage payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Commander must attack to trigger value, exposing it to combat tricks and removal
  • The 'lesser power' restriction limits the size of creatures you can cheat in
  • Boardwipes and Fog effects hit the all-in attack plan hard
  • Card advantage is thin outside of combat triggers; can run out of gas
  • Horse-typal support is shallow, so most haste value comes from cheated bodies

Key Cards

  • Combat Celebrant — Cheat it in attacking and exert for an extra combat phase, doubling your Shadowfax triggers.
  • Aurelia, the Warleader — Extra combat steps mean another Shadowfax attack trigger and another free creature.
  • Hellrider — Punishes your wide, hasty attacking board with direct damage that often ends games.
  • Etali, Primal Storm — A high-impact body you can drop in attacking for a free cascade of value off combat.
  • Goldnight Commander — Pumps your team each time a creature enters, including the ones you cheat in attacking.
  • Iroas, God of Victory — Makes your alpha strikes nearly unblockable and protects attackers from chump-trades.

Upgrade Path

Lean into extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Combat Celebrant, Moraug) and ETB/attack-damage payoffs (Hellrider, Impact Tremors) to convert free creatures into guaranteed damage. Add evasion and protection like Iroas and Dolmen Gate so your all-in attacks survive, and tighten the curve with efficient mana rocks and Sunforger packages to push the deck toward fast, resilient aggro.

Archetypes

  • Aggro / Go-Wide — Haste plus free attacking creatures lets you overwhelm before opponents stabilize.
  • Blink/Cheat-into-play — Shadowfax's trigger puts hand creatures directly into combat, rewarding fat midrange threats.
