Gameplan

Shanna is a two-mana voltron threat that scales with your board, growing larger as you flood the field with creatures. Develop a wide presence early, then suit Shanna up with evasion and protection to swing for lethal commander damage, or pivot into a go-wide token attack backed by anthems and mana doublers.

Strengths

  • Cheap commander that comes down turn 2 and immediately threatens damage
  • Hexproof from opponents' abilities makes her resistant to targeted removal
  • Scales naturally in token/go-wide decks for explosive power
  • GW has excellent ramp, protection, and recursion tools

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to board wipes that reset her +1/+1 bonus to near-zero
  • Can't dodge sacrifice effects, edicts, or non-targeted removal
  • Lacks trample/evasion innately—chump blockers stop her cold
  • No card advantage engine built in; GW can struggle to refill

Key Cards

  • Rancor — Cheap, recursive trample enabler that pushes Shanna's huge bonus through blockers.
  • Shalai, Voice of Plenty — Protects your whole board and Shanna from targeted removal while adding a creature to her count.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Snowballs the whole team and Shanna whenever creatures enter, making go-wide lethal trivial.
  • Heroic Intervention — One-mana insurance against the board wipes and removal that are Shanna's biggest threat.
  • Skullclamp — Solves GW's card-draw problem by cashing in small tokens for fuel.
  • Finale of Devastation — Acts as a tutor, mana sink, and overrun finisher that fits perfectly with a wide board.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana dorks) and tutors like Enlightened Tutor and Steelshaper's Gift to assemble protection and evasion consistently. Lean into a Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes finisher backed by token generators, and prioritize protection (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) to survive the board wipes that punish a wide strategy.
