The Commander

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Shantotto gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the amount of mana spent to cast that spell. If X is 4 or more, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a high volume of cheap-to-expensive noncreature spells to pump Shantotto and refill your hand, then close with commander damage or a big payoff turn. Early turns set up rituals, rocks, and cantrips; midgame you chain spells to grow Shantotto and dig, then swing or combo off. The 'spend 4+ mana' clause rewards X spells and big bursts with free card draw.

Strengths

  • Built-in card advantage that snowballs alongside a growing threat
  • Excellent X-spell and storm-adjacent payoff in two colors
  • Cheap 3-mana commander that demands answers and threatens fast commander kills
  • Synergizes with cost-increasing effects since X counts total mana spent (including taxes)

Weaknesses

  • Glass cannon: Shantotto pumps only +X/+0 and dies to any removal or chump blocks
  • Pump and trample evasion is not innate, so big power can be wasted
  • Heavily spell-dependent—can flood on lands or stall without gas
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate, counters, and stax that tax your spell engine

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rituals (Mana Vault, Jeska's Will, Pyretic/Desperate Ritual) plus cost reducers like Goblin Electromancer to chain more spells per turn. Tighten the package with efficient cantrips, evasion enablers (Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak), and protection (Deflecting Swat, Heroic Intervention) so Shantotto survives to connect or combo. For higher power, lean into Aetherflux Reservoir, Underworld Breach loops, and tutors to make wins more consistent and faster.
