The Commander

Sneak {3}{B}{B}

First strike

Whenever Shark Shredder deals combat damage to a player, put up to one target creature card from that player's graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It enters tapped and attacking that player.

Guide

Gameplan

Get Shark Shredder in for first-strike combat damage, then steal a creature from an opponent's graveyard to swing it back at them the same turn. You play a lean mono-black aggro/reanimation deck that fills enemy graveyards (and your own targets via discard/mill), punches through with evasion and protection, and snowballs by hijacking everything that dies.

Strengths

  • First strike makes it dangerous to block and survives most combat
  • Reanimates opponents' dead creatures, turning their threats into your attackers immediately
  • Sneak lets it ambush attack and dodge sorcery-speed removal by leaving the battlefield
  • Mono-black gives deep access to tutors, removal, and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Steal ability is conditional on connecting in combat
  • Removal-light tables starve it of graveyard targets
  • Commander-centric: relies on Shark Shredder dealing damage, so it's vulnerable to chump blocks and fog effects
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and flying defenders

Key Cards

  • Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable so Shark Shredder reliably connects and triggers the steal.
  • Rogue's Passage — Pushes Shark Shredder through any blocker to guarantee combat damage.
  • Grave Pact — Forces sacrifices that pile creatures into graveyards for you to reanimate.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Evasion plus untap and a hand-strip that protects your attacker and refuels mana.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Powers out the deck and synergizes with a low-curve mono-black aggro shell.

Upgrade Path

Add more guaranteed evasion (Trailblazer's Boots, Cover of Darkness) and protection (Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots) so the commander connects every turn. Lean into edict and sacrifice effects (Dictate of Erebos, Black Market Connections) to keep graveyards stocked, and add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion, Nykthos) plus tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your enablers consistently.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage augmented by equipment and pumps
  • ▸Beating down with an army of stolen creatures
  • ▸Sacrificing reanimated creatures to aristocrats drains like Blood Artist
  • ▸Closing with a finisher like Torment of Hailfire or Exsanguinate after grinding the board

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — Its trigger steals creatures straight from opponents' graveyards onto your battlefield.
  • Theft/Aristocrats — Hijacked creatures can be sacrificed for value with outlets like Viscera Seer and Ashnod's Altar.
  • Voltron — Stacking evasion and protection equipment makes the commander a repeatable, hard-to-stop threat.
  • Aggro — A cheap evasive first striker headlines a fast, low-curve mono-black beatdown plan.
