The Commander

{1}{G}, {T}, Return Shigeki to its owner's hand: Reveal the top four cards of your library. You may put a land card from among them onto the battlefield tapped. Put the rest into your graveyard.

Channel — {X}{X}{G}{G}, Discard this card: Return X target nonlegendary cards from your graveyard to your hand.

Guide

Gameplan

Shigeki is a mono-green value engine that fills your graveyard and ramps simultaneously, turning your yard into a resource you repeatedly cash in. You loop the activated ability to dig for lands and dump cards, then Channel from hand or recast to mass-return your best nonlegendary spells for a refueled second wind. The deck grinds out long games, out-resourcing the table before closing with a payoff threat or recursion engine.

Strengths

  • Doubles as ramp and self-mill, advancing your board while filling the graveyard.
  • Channel offers flexible bulk recursion of nonlegendary permanents and spells for huge card advantage.
  • Resilient and hard to keep down—returns to hand rather than dying, dodging removal.
  • Cheap two-mana commander that comes online immediately with minimal investment.

Weaknesses

  • Mono-green lacks targeted interaction, hard removal, and counterspells.
  • Grindy and slow—loses to fast combo and explosive decks before its value matters.
  • Channel can't return legendary cards, limiting recursion of key commanders/equipment.
  • Repeated bounce-and-recast costs mana and a card each loop, which is tempo-negative.
  • Graveyard hate shuts off the whole engine.

Key Cards

  • Splendid Reclamation — Returns all the lands Shigeki mills into your graveyard for an explosive ramp turn.
  • World Shaper — Synergizes with self-mill to flood the board with lands and rewards graveyard filling.
  • Eternal Witness — Adds redundant recursion and is itself nonlegendary, loopable via Channel.
  • The Gitrog Monster — Turns the lands you mill and sacrifice into raw card draw, supercharging the yard engine.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Plays milled lands from the graveyard repeatedly, converting self-mill into sustained ramp.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth — A classic mono-green finisher that closes games once Shigeki has out-resourced the table.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the lands theme with Crucible of Worlds, Ramunap Excavator, and Splendid Reclamation to convert self-mill into engine ramp, and add Gitrog Monster combo lines for a faster kill. Improve interaction with green's best answers—Beast Within, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer—and add tutors like Worldly Tutor or Survival of the Fittest to find your payoffs. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and dorks (Sol Ring, Birds of Paradise, Wirewood Symbiote loops) so you can deploy Shigeki and abuse it earlier.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede after ramping out a board.
  • ▸A land-based combo such as The Gitrog Monster + Dakmor Salvage for infinite draw into a finisher.
  • ▸Grinding the table out of resources with recursion, then resolving an unbeatable threat or engine.
  • ▸Big mana into a haymaker or X-spell payoff.

Archetypes

  • Lands / Ramp — Shigeki mills lands and puts them onto the battlefield while seeding recursion targets for land payoffs.
  • Graveyard Value / Recursion — Channel and the mill ability make the yard a repeatable hand, enabling grindy attrition strategies.
  • Combo — Reusable recursion plus mass land return can assemble loops like Gitrog or land-sacrifice engines.
  • Stompy / Big Mana — Aggressive ramp into oversized green threats and overrun finishers.
