BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying, vigilance

When Shiko enters, exile target nonland card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard. Copy it, then you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost. (A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Shiko, attack and reuse the best cheap spell in your graveyard for free every turn, snowballing card advantage and tempo from spells you've already paid for. You fill the yard with impactful MV3-or-less cards (ramp, removal, draw, blink), then loop them to grind opponents out or assemble a combo. Jeskai gives you interaction and finishers while Shiko provides recurring value on a 5-mana flying vigilance body.

Strengths

  • Repeatable free recursion of efficient spells generates relentless card and tempo advantage
  • Flying vigilance lets Shiko attack for value while still blocking
  • Pairs with cheap removal and counters to control the board cheaply
  • Copies permanents into tokens, doubling ramp, mana rocks, and value creatures

Weaknesses

  • Shiko does nothing the turn she's first cast if your graveyard is empty
  • Heavily reliant on the commander; vulnerable to repeated removal and tax effects
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts off the engine
  • Jeskai lacks strong recursion outside the command zone if Shiko is locked out

Key Cards

  • Cyclonic Rift — Far too expensive to copy, but illustrates the ceiling—instead loop cheap interaction; Rift is your overload finisher to clear blockers for Shiko.
  • Brainstorm — A perfect MV1 target to copy for repeated card selection and to bury copies back for value.
  • Swords to Plowshares — Free recurring premium removal every time Shiko enters or attacks keeps boards in check.
  • Faithless Looting — Cheap card filtering that also stocks your graveyard with better Shiko targets.
  • Ephemerate — Blinks Shiko to re-trigger her ability and protects her from removal.
  • Mana Crypt — Copying low-cost mana rocks accelerates you and lets a single Shiko trigger snowball into explosive turns.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mox Diamond) and cheap protection (Swan Song, Heroic Intervention, Ephemerate) so Shiko sticks and triggers reliably. Lean into the best MV3-or-less spells—premium removal, free counters, and ETB value—plus self-mill/looting like Faithless Looting and Frantic Search to keep targets stocked. Push toward combo finishes by copying cheap rituals and tutors, and include blink effects to re-trigger Shiko multiple times per turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind opponents out with relentless card advantage from recurring spells, then close with Shiko and flyers
  • ▸Overrun the board after copying value tokens and mana acceleration into a big finisher
  • ▸Assemble a spell-based combo (e.g., looping cheap rituals/tutors) for a single explosive turn
  • ▸Reanimate or recur an evasive threat copied off Shiko for repeated chip damage

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger Value — Shiko recurs cheap instants and sorceries for free, turning every attack into an extra spell.
  • Blink/Flicker — Flickering Shiko re-triggers her recursion while reusing ETB creatures you copy.
  • Control — Looping cheap counters and removal lets you police the table while grinding to victory.
  • Combo — Copying cheap rituals, tutors, and engine pieces can chain into infinite or lethal loops.
