The Commander

At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a Snake.

Whenever Shisato deals combat damage to a player, that player skips their next untap step.

Guide

Gameplan

Shisato is a mono-green stax-voltron creature: connect with him to lock opponents out of their untap step, then chain that lock by stacking untap-denial effects (Frozen Aether, Winter Orb effects, Stasis-style pieces) so the table can't develop while you grind them out. Early turns ramp and build a Snake subtheme to feed his upkeep sacrifice, then suit him up with evasion and pile on permanent tap-down/untap-denial to keep multiple opponents soft-locked.

Strengths

  • Repeatable untap-step denial on combat damage is a hard tempo lock that snowballs in your favor
  • Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp, big mana, and fight/trample evasion
  • Cheap four-mana commander that recasts easily after removal
  • Pairs naturally with green stax pieces and untap-matters cards opponents rarely play around

Weaknesses

  • Needs to connect in combat, so he's stopped cold by blockers, fog, and removal
  • No built-in evasion or protection — relies heavily on auras/equipment, inviting card disadvantage to spot removal
  • Mono-green struggles with flyers, hard interaction, and instant-speed answers
  • The mandatory upkeep Snake sacrifice can hurt you if you run thin on Snake fodder
  • Stax-style locks paint a target and draw table aggression

Key Cards

  • Rogue's Passage — Guarantees Shisato connects to land the untap lock on whoever you choose.
  • Frozen Aether — Permanents enter tapped, layering onto Shisato's skipped untap to fully lock opponents out.
  • Stasis — Stops all untapping table-wide and turns Shisato's lock into a near-total stax prison.
  • Snake Pit — Generates Snake tokens to safely feed the mandatory upkeep sacrifice.
  • Shielded by Faith — Cheap, recurring indestructibility keeps your voltron threat alive through board wipes.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Evasion, protection, and untapping your own lands to keep applying pressure while opponents stay locked.

Upgrade Path

Lean harder into evasion and protection — Whispersilk Cloak, Lightning Greaves, and Berserk-style trample so a single connection matters — then add lock pieces like Winter Orb, Static Orb, and Tangle Wire that punish opponents who can't untap. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana dorks, Three Visits) to deploy Shisato and protection in the same turn, and round out with Heroic Intervention and Tibalt's-style protection to survive the removal your lock invites.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Soft-locking the table with stacked untap denial and grinding out incremental commander damage
  • ▸Voltron kills via equipped Shisato connecting repeatedly
  • ▸Overrun-style trample finishes (Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex) once the board is choked
  • ▸Going wide with Snake tokens and an anthem after opponents can't untap to defend

Archetypes

  • Stax — His untap denial is a stax effect on a stick that combines with green's prison pieces to grind the table to a halt.
  • Voltron — Getting combat damage through is the whole point, so loading him with equipment and protection is core.
  • Snakes Tribal — His upkeep wants Snake fodder, supporting a green Snake-token and tribal build.
  • Group Slug/Pillow Fort — Locking opponents' untap steps while taxing their attacks lets you control multiplayer tempo.
