The Commander

When this enchantment enters, destroy up to one target creature.

At the beginning of your end step, if a creature died under an opponent's control this turn, create a Treasure token. Then if you control three or more Treasures, transform this enchantment.

{1}{B}, Sacrifice another creature or artifact: Yiazmat gains indestructible until end of turn. Tap it.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast Sidequest as a removal spell (kill a creature on ETB), then grind value by forcing opponents' creatures to die each turn to bank Treasures and flip it into Yiazmat, a hard-to-kill Dragon beater. From there you sacrifice fodder and artifacts to keep Yiazmat indestructible while attacking and fueling mono-black aristocrats engines.

Strengths

  • Comes down as a removal spell stapled to a value engine, so it's never a dead draw
  • Treasure generation ramps and fixes/fuels sacrifice payoffs in a deck built around death triggers
  • Yiazmat's repeatable indestructibility makes it extremely resilient to board wipes and combat
  • Synergizes with the wide mono-black toolbox of edict effects, drain, and reanimation

Weaknesses

  • Flip is conditional: you need opponents' creatures dying AND three Treasures, which can stall against creature-light or token-resistant tables
  • Yiazmat taps itself when you grant indestructible, so defending and attacking can compete
  • Enters at five mana, slow for a removal/engine piece in faster metas
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantment/artifact removal and flyers once Yiazmat is dealt with via exile or tuck

Key Cards

  • Dictate of Erebos — Forces opponents' creatures to die whenever yours do, reliably triggering Treasure creation and the flip.
  • Grave Pact — Same sacrifice-loop engine that turns your fodder deaths into opponent deaths to bank Treasures.
  • Bastion of Remembrance — Converts the death-heavy gameplan into a steady drain wincon that runs in parallel to the flip condition.
  • Pawn of Ulamog — Generates the artifact/creature fodder you need to keep Yiazmat indestructible turn after turn.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Stacks extra Treasures off every creature death, accelerating both ramp and the three-Treasure flip.

Upgrade Path

Lean into mass sacrifice payoffs (Dictate of Erebos, Grave Pact, Butcher of Malakir) plus token/Treasure generators so the flip is reliable and you have a backup drain wincon. Add reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead) and free sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Ashnod's Altar) to combo your fodder, and round out with fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring) and premium removal so you can deploy the enchantment earlier and protect Yiazmat once flipped.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage from a resilient, indestructible Yiazmat
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Bastion of Remembrance effects
  • ▸Edict and sacrifice locks (Grave Pact + token generators) that strip opponents of board presence

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Forcing opponent creatures to die fuels the flip while your own sacrifices drive drain and edict payoffs.
  • Treasure/Artifacts — The flip condition and Yiazmat's sacrifice cost reward a Treasure-and-token sacrifice shell.
  • Voltron/Beatdown — Yiazmat's repeatable indestructibility makes it a premier commander-damage threat that survives wraths and blocks.
  • Control — Front-half removal plus mono-black edicts and recursion let you grind opponents out before flipping.
