The Commander

{T}, Sacrifice another creature or an artifact: For each opponent, you mill a card, then return that card from your graveyard to your hand unless that player pays 3 life. (To mill a card, put the top card of your library into your graveyard.)

Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)

Guide

Gameplan

Sivriss turns expendable creatures and artifacts into a repeatable draw-and-drain engine: each activation mills you cards and pulls them back to hand, while opponents bleed 3 life apiece to stop you. Build an aristocrats/sacrifice shell that floods the board with fodder, recur key pieces from the yard, and grind every opponent's life total down while you refuel.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage that doubles as group-wide life loss in multiplayer
  • Self-mill synergizes perfectly with reanimation and graveyard payoffs
  • Cheap commander at 4 MV that's a value engine without needing combat
  • Background slot lets you tailor a second commander for protection or aggression
  • Punishes life-payment effects and stacks with other 'pay life' pressure

Weaknesses

  • Engine is sorcery-speed and tap-gated, so removal of Sivriss shuts it off
  • Needs a steady supply of fodder—runs dry without token or treasure generation
  • Mono-black means limited interaction with artifacts/enchantments and no blue card draw redundancy
  • Symmetrical-ish life loss can paint a target on you politically
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate that strands your recursion plan

Key Cards

  • Bitterblossom — Free Faerie every turn gives Sivriss endless sacrifice fodder at no further cost.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Turns every sacrificed creature into a Treasure, fueling both Sivriss costs and mana for big plays.
  • Dictate of Erebos — Each sacrifice forces opponents to lose creatures, multiplying the value of every Sivriss activation.
  • Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Your card draw from Sivriss returns gains life while opponents paying or drawing get punished.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrificing 1-toughness tokens to Sivriss or drawing two cards keeps your hand and yard stocked.
  • Gravecrawler — Recurring fodder you can replay every turn to feed the sacrifice engine indefinitely.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, Jet Medallion) and free fodder engines (Bitterblossom, Endrek Sahr, Ophiomancer) so the engine never stalls. Tighten the win plan with aristocrats drains (Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance) plus a reanimation package (Reanimate, Animate Dead) to abuse self-mill, and pick a Background like Cultist of the Absolute for a beatdown backup or a defensive one if you want resilience.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Incremental group-wide life loss from repeated Sivriss taxes plus Sheoldred/Blood Artist effects
  • ▸Reanimating a finisher milled by Sivriss and beating down
  • ▸Aristocrats drain loops with Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and a sacrifice payoff
  • ▸Commander-pairing aggro (Voltron Background) closing the game in combat

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Sivriss is a sacrifice outlet that rewards a board full of fodder with cards and life drain.
  • Reanimator — Self-mill from Sivriss bins bombs you can return with reanimation spells.
  • Group Slug — The 3-life tax per opponent each turn turns card advantage into a creeping life-loss clock.
  • Tokens — Token producers supply infinite cheap sacrifice material for the engine.
