BuildCard details

The Commander

{T}, Sacrifice an artifact: Add an amount of {R} equal to the sacrificed artifact's mana value. Spend this mana only to cast artifact spells or activate abilities of artifacts.

Guide

Gameplan

Slobad turns your artifacts into red ramp by sacrificing them for mana equal to their mana value, fueling a chain of bigger artifacts and recursion. You build a board of cheap artifacts, sacrifice the expendable ones to ritual out powerful payoffs, and grind value through recursion engines until you assemble a combo or overwhelm with artifact-driven threats. Turn to turn you're deploying mana rocks and treasure-makers, then cashing them in for explosive artifact turns.

Strengths

  • Acts as an artifact-focused ramp engine, effectively doubling mana into artifact spells
  • Synergizes brilliantly with sacrifice payoffs, treasure tokens, and free/recurring artifacts
  • Cheap to cast at three mana and immediately impactful
  • Enables explosive single-turn artifact dumps and combo setups

Weaknesses

  • Mana is restricted to artifacts only, so it can't fix or accelerate noncreature spells broadly
  • Sacrificing artifacts can leave you card-disadvantaged without recursion
  • Mono-red lacks reliable card draw and removal compared to other colors
  • Vulnerable to artifact wipes (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress) that gut the whole strategy
  • Requires the artifact to enter before being sacrificed, creating tempo lulls

Key Cards

  • Krark-Clan Ironworks — Redundant Slobad effect that turns sacrificed artifacts into colorless mana for explosive turns and combos.
  • Goblin Engineer — Tutors artifacts to the battlefield and graveyard, feeding Slobad's sacrifice loops.
  • Daretti, Scrap Savant — Loots and reanimates artifacts, recurring everything you feed to Slobad.
  • Myr Retriever — Recurs artifacts from the graveyard, forming value loops with cheap sacrifice fodder.
  • Scrap Trawler — Cascading recursion engine that returns cheaper artifacts as you sacrifice bigger ones.
  • Wurmcoil Engine — A premium payoff to ramp into and a resilient body that leaves tokens when sacrificed.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mox Opal) and free artifacts to chain sacrifices, then install a Krark-Clan Ironworks + Myr Retriever + Scrap Trawler engine with Disciple of the Vault or Marionette Master as the kill. Improve consistency with tutors like Goblin Engineer, Reshape, and Gamble, and protect your engine with Defense Grid or Pyroblast effects. Finally, tune your fodder toward zero-cost artifacts and treasure generators so Slobad and KCI loops stay live.
