BuildCard details

The Commander

Swampwalk (This creature can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Swamp.)

Whenever a player casts a black spell, you gain 1 life.

Guide

Gameplan

Sol'kanar is a Grixis good-stuff commander that leans on a slow-grind control plan: deploy removal and counters, drain incrementally as black spells resolve, then close with a big threat or value engine. The lifegain incentivizes leaning heavily on black spells and exploiting the trigger with cheap, repeatable casts. Turn to turn you interact, accrue card advantage, and protect a late-game finisher.

Strengths

  • Three colors of premium removal, counterspells, and card draw
  • Passive lifegain buffers against aggro and fuels life-payment engines
  • Grixis access to the best reanimation and tutors in the format
  • Swampwalk gives reliable evasive commander damage against black-heavy tables

Weaknesses

  • Lifegain trigger is symmetrical-friendly and barely impacts the board
  • Swampwalk is irrelevant against many non-black/non-Swamp opponents
  • No inherent card advantage or board impact on its own
  • Five-mana body that dies to spot removal with no protection built in

Key Cards

  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns Sol'kanar's incidental lifegain into a one-shot kill engine across the table.
  • Sanguine Bond — Converts every black-spell lifegain trigger into direct opponent damage.
  • Necropotence — Premier black card-advantage engine, and the life buffer from Sol'kanar offsets the life cost.
  • Toxic Deluge — Black board wipe that scales and triggers your own lifegain on cast.
  • Bolas's Citadel — Plays off the top of your library and pairs with your lifegain to pay life freely.
  • Cyclonic Rift — The blue control payoff that creates the decisive tempo swing to win.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, signets) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to find your lifegain payoffs faster. Tighten the spell base toward black instants/sorceries to maximize triggers, and include protection like Lightning Greaves plus a tight combo (Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood) for a deterministic kill.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Sanguine Bond plus mass lifegain drains the table
  • ▸Commander damage via unblockable swampwalk beats
  • ▸Grinding to a single big threat or Cyclonic Rift-backed control finish

Archetypes

  • Control — Grixis colors give counters, removal, and card draw to grind opponents out while Sol'kanar stabilizes life.
  • Lifedrain — The black-spell lifegain trigger feeds payoffs like Sanguine Bond and Aetherflux Reservoir for direct damage.
  • Reanimator — Black and blue enable cheating fatties like Razaketh or Sheoldred into play for value or kills.
  • Spellslinger — A black-heavy instant/sorcery shell repeatedly triggers lifegain while leveraging Grixis card velocity.
