The Commander

When Spider-Man 2099 enters, return up to one target creature to its owner's hand.

Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a mono-blue tempo/aggro deck that connects with creatures to refill your hand every combat, then converts that card advantage into pressure and counterspells to protect your board. Use Spider-Man's ETB bounce to reset your own value creatures or buy tempo against opponents, and snowball off evasive attackers that reliably draw cards each turn.

Strengths

  • Repeatable card advantage from just one creature dealing combat damage—the draw triggers once per player, not per creature, but reliably refuels each turn
  • ETB bounce is reusable via blink/flicker and self-bounce, providing tempo and removal of pseudo-threats
  • Mono-blue gives access to the best counterspells, card draw, and evasion enablers in the format
  • Cheap to recast at 5 mana and immediately impactful on re-entry

Weaknesses

  • Mono-blue struggles with permanent removal and enchantment/artifact hatred
  • The draw trigger requires connecting in combat, so board wipes and chump blockers shut it off
  • Bounce is only soft removal—opponents recast their threats
  • Can be slow to actually close games without dedicated finishers

Key Cards

  • Coastal Piracy — Doubles down on the combat-damage payoff, drawing extra cards whenever your creatures connect.
  • Bident of Thassa — Both draws on combat damage and forces opponents to attack, keeping their blockers tapped out.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Premier mono-blue blowout that clears blockers so your creatures connect and snowball card advantage.
  • Ghostly Flicker — Reuses the ETB bounce while also being a flexible blink/reset tool in blue.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Blinks Spider-Man each turn to repeatedly bounce threats and gives your attackers evasion.

Upgrade Path

Add more evasion and unblockable enablers (Aqueous Form, Rogue's Passage, Tetsuko Umezawa) so the draw trigger is never denied, and lean into flicker engines (Eldrazi Displacer, Deadeye Navigator) to weaponize the bounce. Tighten the counterspell suite and add fast mana like Sol Ring and signets to deploy Spider-Man early and protect him, then top off with a hard finisher such as Thassa's Oracle plus a deck-emptying draw spell.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grinding incremental card advantage into an overwhelming evasive board
  • ▸Voltron-style commander damage with unblockable enablers on a buffed Spider-Man
  • ▸Finishers like Stroke of Genius or a mill/laboratory-style outlet powered by huge card draw
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload followed by an alpha strike

Archetypes

  • Tempo — Bounce effects plus counterspells keep opponents off-balance while you chip in for cards.
  • Blink — Flicker effects abuse the ETB bounce repeatedly as soft removal and tempo.
  • Spellslinger Control — Mono-blue lets you draw off combat, then leverage that card flow into counters and bounce to control the table.
  • Evasion Aggro — Unblockable and flying creatures guarantee the combat-damage draw trigger fires every turn.
