BuildCard details

The Commander

Whenever Spider-Slayer deals damage to a Spider, destroy that creature.

{6}, Exile this card from your graveyard: Create two tapped 1/1 colorless Robot artifact creature tokens with flying.

Guide

Gameplan

As a 2-mana colorless artifact creature commander, Spider-Slayer leads a mono-artifact aggro/voltron deck that curves out fast, attacks early, and uses cheap equipment and artifact synergies to grind value. Its Spider-destroying trigger is mostly irrelevant text in EDH, so you treat it as an evasive-friendly beater you suit up while flooding the board with artifacts. The graveyard ability ({6} for two flying Robots) gives modest insurance after it dies, but the deck's real power comes from being playable in any color-identity-restricted deck and from a focused colorless artifact engine.

Strengths

  • Two-mana commander that comes down early and pressures opponents immediately
  • Colorless identity means access to every powerful colorless artifact, land, and Eldrazi
  • Pairs perfectly with cheap equipment and artifact-matters payoffs
  • Graveyard ability provides a recursion outlet, making it hard to fully neutralize

Weaknesses

  • No inherent evasion, card advantage, or protection in its text
  • The Spider-damage clause is a near-dead ability in normal pods
  • Colorless deckbuilding lacks efficient removal, ramp, and card draw compared to colored decks
  • Vulnerable to artifact wraths and Stony Silence-style hate that shuts off the whole strategy

Key Cards

  • Swiftfoot Boots — Cheap colorless equipment that grants hexproof and haste, protecting your beater and letting it attack the turn it lands.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Gives indestructible and free attach, turning Spider-Slayer into a resilient voltron threat.
  • Lightning Greaves — Haste plus shroud for two mana keeps your commander swinging while dodging targeted removal.
  • Kuldotha Forgemaster — Sacrifices artifacts to tutor any artifact onto the battlefield, a colorless power piece for assembling threats.
  • Karn, Silver Golem — Animates your artifacts as attackers, exploiting the dense artifact base for extra damage.
  • Inventors' Fair — Colorless land that tutors artifacts and gains life when you control three or more.

Upgrade Path

Lean into fast colorless mana rocks (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault) and powerful colorless lands (Ancient Tomb, Inventors' Fair) to power out threats ahead of curve. Add efficient equipment with built-in protection plus artifact tutors like Whir of Invention's colorless cousins and Kuldotha Forgemaster, then top out with Eldrazi finishers (Ulamog, Kozilek) or a combo like Karn, Silver Golem plus a stax shell to break parity.

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Suit up Spider-Slayer with colorless equipment to push through commander damage.
  • Artifact Combo/Stax — Colorless gives access to Eldrazi, Mishra's Workshop-style ramp, and lock pieces like Winter Orb.
