The Commander

When Splinter & Leo enter, choose one or both. Each mode must target a different player.

• Target player creates a 2/2 red Mutant creature token.

• Put a +1/+1 counter on each other creature target player controls.

Guide

Gameplan

Splinter & Leo is a mono-white go-wide/counters commander that builds a board through repeated ETB triggers. Cast and recast it via blink and reanimation to either spawn 2/2 Mutants or pump your team, then overwhelm with anthems, equipment, and wide-board finishers. You curve out on tokens and counter synergies, defend with white's removal and protection, then close through combat or token-based combos.

Strengths

  • Cheap three-mana commander with a flexible, repeatable ETB that fits both tokens and +1/+1 counter shells
  • Mono-white means consistent, cheap mana and access to the format's best protection, board wipes, and stax pieces
  • Blink and bounce loops turn the ETB into a snowballing engine of creatures and counters
  • Easy to rebuild after wraths since the commander itself replenishes the board

Weaknesses

  • Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp, so it can stall on resources in longer games
  • The ETB does nothing the turn it enters unless you have payoffs already on board
  • Vulnerable to mass removal that erases a wide board built over several turns
  • Limited reach and interaction with the stack compared to multicolor decks

Key Cards

  • Conjurer's Closet — Reliably blinks Splinter & Leo each end step to retrigger tokens or counters for free.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Turns every token and ETB into stacking +1/+1 counters across your whole board.
  • Skullclamp — Solves white's card-draw problem by sacrificing 2/2 Mutant tokens for two cards each.
  • Anointed Procession — Doubles the Mutant tokens from the ETB and every other token maker.
  • Divine Visitation — Upgrades the 2/2 Mutants into 4/4 flying Angels for a faster clock.
  • Felidar Guardian — Blinks Splinter & Leo on cast for an extra trigger and chains with other flicker effects.

Upgrade Path

Lean into blink enablers (Conjurer's Closet, Felidar Guardian, Restoration Angel) to maximize ETB value, and add token doublers (Anointed Procession) plus payoffs (Cathars' Crusade, Divine Visitation). Shore up mono-white's weaknesses with rocks like Smothering Tithe and card advantage from Skullclamp and Welcoming Vampire. For higher power, add stax pieces and a fast finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or an Approach of the Second Sun plan.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with Mutant tokens buffed by anthems like Intangible Virtue and Cathars' Crusade
  • ▸Overrun effects such as Craterhoof Behemoth or Finale of Glory turning tokens lethal
  • ▸Voltron-style beatdown with counters and equipment after stacking ETB pumps
  • ▸Token-based value plus Skullclamp grinding opponents out of resources

Archetypes

  • Tokens — The first mode pumps out Mutants that anthems and doublers turn into a lethal swarm.
  • +1/+1 Counters — The second mode and Cathars' Crusade synergies grow a counters-matter board.
  • Blink — Flicker effects retrigger the ETB repeatedly for value and inevitability.
  • Stax/Hatebears — Mono-white can pair the wide board with taxing and pillow-fort pieces to grind out wins.
