The Commander

Flying

When Stockman enters, draw a card, then discard a card.

Islandcycling {2} ({2}, Discard this card: Search your library for an Island card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.)

Guide

Gameplan

Stockman is a mono-blue 5-mana 3/3-ish flyer whose value comes from the enters-the-battlefield loot and its flexibility (islandcycling early when you don't want a creature). You build around recurring that loot effect via blink/bounce, lean on card selection to assemble a control or combo plan, and close with evasive threats, big spells, or an infinite engine. Turn to turn you're filtering draws, holding interaction, and grinding card advantage while protecting your win pieces.

Strengths

  • Mono-blue gives access to the format's best counterspells, card draw, and tutors.
  • Built-in flexibility: islandcycle it for a land when you're flooded on action or color-screwed.
  • Loot ETB filters dead cards and enables graveyard/discard synergies, especially when blinked repeatedly.
  • Evasive flyer that can carry equipment or pressure planeswalkers.

Weaknesses

  • The commander itself is low-impact; a 5-mana looter is unimpressive without a build-around engine.
  • Mono-blue lacks efficient removal and struggles against resolved enchantments and big resilient creatures.
  • No ramp in-color means slow starts compared to green or ritual-heavy decks.
  • Vulnerable to being a glass cannon if you over-commit to combo without enough interaction.

Key Cards

  • Ephemerate — Flickers Stockman to re-trigger the loot twice, smoothing draws and fueling discard payoffs.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Mono-blue's premier blowout, resetting the board so your flyers and engine can close.
  • Mystic Sanctuary — With islands flowing it returns your best instant/sorcery, a strong recursion loop.
  • Rhystic Study — Best-in-color card engine to keep Stockman decks ahead on resources.
  • Thassa, Deep-Dwelling — Repeatable end-step blink turns the loot ETB into a recurring card-filter engine.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a blink package (Ephemerate, Thassa, Conjurer's Closet) so the loot becomes a true engine rather than a one-shot, and add a tight combo finish to convert card advantage into wins. Upgrade the mana base with fast lands and rocks (Sol Ring, Mind Stone) since mono-blue lacks ramp, and prioritize free/cheap interaction (Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship) to protect your plan. If going higher power, build toward a compact win like Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal or a Laboratory Maniac/Thassa's Oracle finish.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Evasive beats from Stockman and other flyers, often pumped or equipped.
  • ▸Mono-blue combo finishes (e.g., infinite mana into a big draw/mill outlet).
  • ▸Cyclonic Rift overload into a clean alpha strike.
  • ▸Grinding opponents out with superior card advantage and counterspell lockdown.

Archetypes

  • Blink/Flicker — Repeatedly flickering Stockman turns his loot into a renewable card-filtering engine.
  • Control — Mono-blue counters and bounce let you steer the game while Stockman flies in for chip damage.
  • Spellslinger — The loot smooths spell density and feeds discard/graveyard payoffs for instant-sorcery strategies.
  • Combo — Card filtering and blue tutors help you dig to compact infinite combos to win out of nowhere.
