BuildCard details

The Commander

Sketch and Lore — {2}{R}, {T}: Target opponent exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile an instant, sorcery, or creature card. You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. If you cast a creature spell this way, it gains haste and "At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice this creature." Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Strago and Relm turns your opponents' libraries into your hand: pay {2}{R} and tap to mill an opponent until you hit an instant, sorcery, or creature and cast it for free. You ramp toward repeated activations, protect the commander, and snowball card and tempo advantage while your stolen spells generate value or close the game.

Strengths

  • Repeatable free-cast card advantage that costs your opponents resources too
  • Cheap three-mana body that demands removal yet rebuilds value the moment it untaps
  • Can steal removal, board wipes, and bombs you would never run in mono-red
  • Pairs with untap and extra-activation effects for explosive turns

Weaknesses

  • Mono-red color identity means weak interaction, ramp ceilings, and no recursion
  • Activation is sorcery-speed, tap-dependent, and only hits one opponent at a time
  • Output is random—you may whiff into lands or grab something useless
  • Stolen creatures are sacrificed each end step, so it's value not a permanent board
  • Commander-reliant: removal or repeated tap-down stalls the whole engine

Key Cards

  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Lets Strago and Relm activate the turn it enters and untaps it for a second steal each turn.
  • Magewright's Stone — Cheap untapper that doubles your activations for explosive multi-spell turns.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands and protects the commander so you can chain activations across a turn.
  • Strionic Resonator — Copies the triggered/activated value engine context and supports a redundancy-heavy build.
  • Mana Geyser — Generates a huge burst to fuel multiple Sketch and Lore activations in one turn.
  • Aggravated Assault — Extra combat plus untap synergies turn stolen hasty creatures into real damage.
  • Sundial of the Infinite — Lets you keep stolen creatures by ending the turn before the sacrifice trigger resolves.

Upgrade Path

Prioritize untap effects (Thousand-Year Elixir, Magewright's Stone, Sword of Feast and Famine) and big ramp (Mana Geyser, Jeska's Will, Ruby Medallion) to squeeze multiple activations per turn. Add ways to keep stolen creatures like Sundial of the Infinite, and protect your commander with Lightning Greaves and Heroic Intervention-style red options. Top-end finishers such as Aggravated Assault, Sneak Attack synergies, and burn payoffs convert your stolen value into actual kills.
