The Commander

Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Then if that creature has power 4 or greater, it gains first strike until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Strider is a Gruul beatdown/landfall commander that turns extra land drops into combat buffs. You ramp aggressively, drop multiple lands per turn to pump a threat, and crash in with buffed, first-striking attackers backed by trample and haste.

Strengths

  • Cheap 4-mana commander with immediate board impact
  • Synergizes with extra land drops to repeatedly buff creatures
  • Pairs naturally with Gruul ramp and big-creature aggro
  • First strike granting protects attackers in combat

Weaknesses

  • Effect is incremental and can be slow without extra land drops
  • Relies on having a creature already in play to matter
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your aggressive board
  • No card advantage engine built into the commander
  • Buffs only last until end of turn, no permanent growth

Key Cards

  • Exploration — Lets you play extra lands each turn to trigger multiple landfall pumps.
  • Burgeoning — Cheap enabler that dumps extra lands for repeated Strider triggers.
  • Azusa, Lost but Seeking — Two extra land drops per turn means three landfall buffs each turn.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays fetched or sacrificed lands for recurring landfall value.
  • Scapeshift — Drops many lands at once for a massive burst of pump and first strike.
  • Wrenn and Six — Recurs lands from the graveyard to fuel continuous landfall triggers.

Upgrade Path

Add more extra-land-drop enablers (Oracle of Mul Daya, Ramunap Excavator, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove) and fetchlands to maximize landfall triggers per turn. Layer in trample and evasion payoffs like Rhonas the Indomitable and overrun effects (Pathbreaker Ibex, Craterhoof Behemoth) to close games. Round out with strong Gruul card advantage such as Beast Whisperer and Garruk's Uprising so your aggression doesn't run out of gas.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Swing with buffed, first-striking creatures for big chunks of damage
  • ▸Voltron a single threat with trample and combat buffs for commander damage
  • ▸Overrun-style alpha strikes after flooding the board with lands and tokens

Archetypes

  • Landfall Aggro — Strider converts extra land drops directly into combat-relevant buffs.
  • Gruul Beatdown — Cheap commander that immediately pressures with pumped first-striking attackers.
  • Voltron — Repeated +1/+1 buffs and first strike push a single equipped threat through blockers.
  • Lands Ramp — Wants a high land count and extra land drops, leaning into land-matters payoffs.
