The Commander

This spell can't be countered.

Trample

Whenever a creature you control or a creature spell you control becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Surrak is a mono-green stompy/protection commander who turns your opponents' interaction against them: every time they target one of your creatures, you draw a card. Build big threats with hexproof-style payoffs, force opponents to spend removal (or punish them when they do), and close with trampling beaters. Cheap, uncounterable, and aggressive, Surrak gets going on turn three and snowballs card advantage.

Strengths

  • Uncounterable, three-mana commander that comes down early and reliably
  • Converts opponents' targeted removal into raw card advantage
  • Trample helps push damage and pairs with green's mana ramp into huge threats
  • Mono-green has the format's best ramp, enabling fast, resilient boards

Weaknesses

  • No evasion beyond trample and limited interaction typical of mono-green
  • Board wipes and edicts (non-targeting effects) dodge the draw trigger
  • Reliant on opponents choosing to target you; passive players starve the engine
  • Lacks card draw, removal, and recursion compared to multicolor decks

Key Cards

  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your whole board from wipes and targeted removal while you bank Surrak triggers.
  • Rhonas the Indomitable — A cheap, hard-to-kill beater that gives trample and pump, amplifying Surrak's aggression.
  • Tovolar's Huntmaster — Big trampler with value that demands removal, fueling card draw when targeted.
  • Greater Good — Turns your oversized creatures into massive card draw, complementing Surrak's engine.
  • Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger — Doubles your mana and taxes opponents, letting you out-resource the table with green ramp.
  • Garruk, Primal Hunter — Token generation plus draw-based-on-power keeps gas flowing alongside Surrak.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, mana dorks) and ramp like Carpet of Flowers to deploy threats ahead of curve, then include payoffs such as Craterhoof Behemoth and Finale of Devastation as one-card finishers. Lean into protection (Heroic Intervention, Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Snakeskin Veil) so removal becomes pure card draw, and trim narrow beaters for tutors like Green Sun's Zenith and Worldly Tutor to assemble your best threats consistently.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Trampling over the table with oversized, ramped-out creatures
  • ▸Voltron kills with a single buffed, protected threat
  • ▸Overrun effects like Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex closing in one swing
  • ▸Grinding opponents out of resources via Surrak's card advantage then alpha-striking

Archetypes

  • Stompy/Aggro — Cheap uncounterable body plus trample and green ramp pressures the table early and often.
  • Voltron — Pile enchantments and equipment on a single threat; opponents must target it, drawing you cards.
  • Big Creatures/Ramp — Mono-green ramp deploys enormous trampling threats Surrak rewards you for protecting.
  • Hexproof/Protection — Pairing protection effects with Surrak punishes interaction and keeps your board sticky.
