The Commander

Flash

Flying

Mayhem {B} (You may cast this card from your graveyard for {B} if you discarded it this turn. Timing rules still apply.)

Guide

Gameplan

Swarm is a cheap, evasive mono-black commander that thrives on discard: you fill the graveyard, then cast Swarm and other cards back with Mayhem for {B}. Early turns set up rummaging and reanimation engines; mid-game you grind value while chipping in with a flying commander you can keep recasting cheaply after it dies or gets discarded.

Strengths

  • Extremely cheap and resilient — recurs from the graveyard for {B} via Mayhem and dodges sorcery-speed removal thanks to Flash.
  • Flying makes it a reliable evasive attacker for incidental damage or as a Voltron base.
  • Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors, removal, and card draw to keep the engine fueled.
  • Synergizes naturally with discard, madness, and graveyard themes that other decks find awkward.

Weaknesses

  • Low base power means it closes games slowly without buffs or a payoff combo.
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts down Mayhem recursion and reanimation.
  • Mono-black struggles to interact with artifacts, enchantments, and noncreature spells.
  • Relies on self-discard enablers; a clunky draw can leave you with cards stranded in hand.

Key Cards

  • Faithless Looting — Cheap discard outlet that lets you pitch Swarm or fatties and recast Swarm via Mayhem the same turn.
  • Bone Miser — Turns every discard from your enablers into mana, cards, and tokens, supercharging the Mayhem plan.
  • Reanimate — Cheating big threats into play from the graveyard you fill while enabling Swarm's Mayhem casts.
  • Phyrexian Tower — Sacrifice Swarm for mana, then bring it back for {B} from the graveyard for repeatable value.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Pushes the evasive flyer toward a Voltron kill while its discard trigger feeds your graveyard plan.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and the best black tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal) to assemble engines faster, and lean into a tight reanimator package with Entomb and Buried Alive. Tighten the discard suite (Faithless Looting, Containment Construct, Bone Miser) so every pitched card generates advantage, and include protection like Malakir Rebirth and free interaction to defend your key turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Reanimating oversized threats (Archon of Cruelty, Razaketh) for repeated value and beatdown.
  • ▸Voltron damage with Swarm carrying swords and evasion buffs.
  • ▸Aristocrats drains via Blood Artist effects with Swarm as endless sacrifice fodder.
  • ▸Grinding opponents out of resources, then closing with recurring flying attacks.

Archetypes

  • Reanimator — Self-discard enablers that fuel Swarm's Mayhem also dump huge threats you reanimate for cheap.
  • Aristocrats — Swarm is a free recurring sacrifice fodder body that returns for {B} after each death trigger.
  • Voltron — Flash, flying, and cheap recastability make Swarm a slippery equipment carrier that's hard to permanently answer.
  • Madness/Discard — The commander rewards filling your graveyard, pairing perfectly with discard outlets and madness payoffs.
