The Commander

Vigilance, menace

Whenever an equipped creature you control attacks, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.

Equipment you control have equip Knight {0}.

Guide

Gameplan

Syr Gwyn is a Mardu equipment-Voltron deck that loads up Knights and big bodies with cheap or free Equipment, swings wide with vigilance/menace, and refills your hand off the attack trigger. You ramp into Gwyn early, deploy efficient Equipment plus Knight payoffs, and use the free Knight equip cost to suit up multiple attackers in a single turn for lethal commander damage or a wide alpha strike.

Strengths

  • Free {0} equip on Knights lets you move buffs across the board for explosive turns
  • Built-in card advantage on every equipped attack keeps the hand full
  • Vigilance plus menace makes Gwyn both an attacker and a blocker that's hard to chump
  • Mardu colors give the best removal, recursion, and equipment tutors in the format

Weaknesses

  • Commander-dependent: heavy investment in Gwyn is vulnerable to repeated removal and tax effects
  • Equipment voltron is soft to board wipes and creature-light boards leave you with dead gear
  • No evasion beyond menace means a single big blocker or fog can stall the alpha strike
  • Life loss from the attack trigger and aggressive ramp can leave you low against burn/aristocrats

Key Cards

  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands on combat damage and grants protection, enabling double-spell turns and safe attacks.
  • Stoneforge Mystic — Cheats Equipment into play and tutors your best swords, accelerating the gameplan dramatically.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free equip with metalcraft plus card draw makes it a second Gwyn-style engine.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Flash in Equipment and attach for free at instant speed, ambushing blockers and combat tricks.
  • Open the Armory — Tutors any Equipment or Aura to find the right buff for the situation.
  • Hammer of Nazahn — Auto-attaches and grants indestructible, protecting your equipped attacker through removal.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and efficient ramp (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, Fellwar Stone) plus more equip enablers like Sram, Senior Edificer and Bruenor Battlehammer to chain Equipment for free. Prioritize protection (Hammer of Nazahn, Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves) and instant-speed tutors so Gwyn survives, and include a clean one-shot package (Colossus Hammer + Sigarda's Aid, Embercleave) to close games before the table stabilizes. Trim clunky high-cost gear in favor of the modal swords and cheap impactful Equipment.
