BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying, haste

At the beginning of each end step, if a creature card left your graveyard this turn, target Phoenix you control deals damage equal to its power to any target.

Whenever another Phoenix you control dies, you may cast this card from your graveyard.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a Phoenix tribal aggro deck that fields recursive flyers, then trigger Syrix's end-step ping by returning creatures from your graveyard each turn. You attack in the air while burning down opponents and their creatures, and Syrix endlessly recurs herself when other Phoenixes die. Cheap Phoenixes that recur, plus reanimation/recursion engines, fuel a grindy, hard-to-kill board.

Strengths

  • Extremely resilient commander that recasts itself from the graveyard whenever a Phoenix dies
  • Repeatable end-step damage to any target acts as removal and a reach-based win condition
  • Evasive flying tribal beats that are hard to block profitably
  • Naturally grindy in BR with strong recursion and reanimation tools

Weaknesses

  • Phoenix tribe is shallow, so card quality drops fast in pure tribal builds
  • The end-step trigger requires a creature to leave your graveyard each turn, which can be inconsistent
  • Vulnerable to graveyard hate, which neutralizes both recursion and Syrix's recast
  • Boardwipes and lifegain decks can blunt the aggro plan
  • No card advantage engine baked in beyond Syrix herself

Key Cards

  • Skyfire Phoenix — Cheap recurring Phoenix that returns from the graveyard, fueling Syrix's ping trigger and giving consistent flying damage.
  • Everquill Phoenix — Recurs itself and copies your best creatures, padding the Phoenix count and giving repeatable graveyard departures.
  • Ashling, Flame Dancer — Spellslinger payoff that adds Phoenix synergy and burn-based reach alongside Syrix's pings.
  • Feldon of the Third Path — Reanimates creatures each turn so something always leaves the graveyard, reliably enabling the end-step damage trigger.
  • Phyrexian Reclamation — Repeatable way to return creatures from the graveyard to hand, consistently flipping on Syrix's end-step ability.
  • Goblin Bombardment — Free sacrifice outlet to kill your own Phoenixes, triggering Syrix's recast and turning bodies into damage.
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge — Turns every Phoenix entering and re-entering into direct damage, accelerating the burn-based win.

Upgrade Path

Lean into the aristocrats angle with free sac outlets (Goblin Bombardment, Viscera Seer) and ETB/death payoffs (Purphoros, Impact Tremors, Bastion of Remembrance) so each Phoenix death loops Syrix and pings the table. Add fast mana (Ritual effects, Dockside Extortionist) and tutors to assemble engines quicker, plus reanimation like Reanimate and Animate Dead to cheat in finishers. Round out with graveyard-hate protection and efficient interaction to survive long enough for the burn engine to close.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Repeated end-step pings from Syrix and other Phoenixes burning out opponents
  • ▸Evasive flying aggro from a wide, recursive Phoenix board
  • ▸Purphoros/Impact Tremors-style ETB damage from constantly recurring creatures
  • ▸Sacrifice loops with free outlets converting Phoenix deaths into damage

Archetypes

  • Tribal Aggro — Syrix anchors a Phoenix tribal deck of recursive evasive flyers that pressure life totals.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing Phoenixes triggers Syrix's recast and feeds death/recursion payoffs for incremental damage.
  • Reanimator — Graveyard recursion both fuels Syrix's end-step trigger and rebuilds the board after wipes.
  • Spellslinger — BR burn and instants/sorceries pair with Phoenix payoffs like Ashling to push reach and removal.
