The Commander

Vigilance

{1}{R}, {T}: Tahngarth deals damage equal to its power to target creature. That creature deals damage equal to its power to Tahngarth.

Guide

Gameplan

Tahngarth is a mono-red removal engine: pump its power, then tap to fight down creatures while its vigilance keeps it back to block. You build toward indestructibility or damage prevention so Tahngarth survives the return damage, then snowball into a board-controlling beater that also chips opponents. Win by attacking with a buffed, hard-to-kill commander while clearing every blocker out of the way.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, mana-efficient creature removal that scales with power buffs
  • Vigilance lets it both attack and police the board each turn
  • Mono-red gives consistent mana and easy access to power-pumping and indestructible support
  • Damage doublers turn the fight ability into a one-sided sweeper

Weaknesses

  • Single-target removal that ignores artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers
  • Commander-dependent and a prime removal magnet, leading to expensive recasts
  • Return damage can kill Tahngarth without protection
  • Mono-red struggles with card advantage and noncreature threats

Key Cards

  • Gratuitous Violence — Doubles Tahngarth's damage so it kills creatures while taking far less back.
  • Embercleave — Spikes power for huge one-sided fights and lethal swings, often cast cheaply.
  • Basilisk Collar — Deathtouch plus lifelink makes every fight a guaranteed kill that gains life.
  • Darksteel Plate — Indestructible means Tahngarth survives any return damage and most board wipes.
  • Fireshrieker — Double strike effectively doubles fight damage and combat damage to faces.
  • Sword of Fire and Ice — Protection, a power boost, and a free ping plus card draw fix red's biggest holes.

Upgrade Path

Add damage doublers (Gratuitous Violence, Furnace of Rath) and deathtouch sources (Basilisk Collar, Gorgon Flail) to make fights free and lethal, while stacking protection like Darksteel Plate and Swords for resilience. Lean into red's best card advantage—Sword of Fire and Ice, Outpost Siege, Wheel of Misfortune—and ramp/cost reducers so repeated commander casts hurt less. Tutors like Stoneforge Mystic, Steelshaper's Gift, and Sword of the Animist fetch your key equipment to assemble the kill faster.
