BuildCard details

The Commander

Skip your draw step.

At the beginning of your upkeep, look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest into your graveyard.

{B}, {T}, Exile X cards from your graveyard: Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Taigam turns your upkeep into a free Dig Through Time every turn—skip your draw, look at the top three, take the best card and dump the rest into your graveyard. You fuel a black-blue reanimator/graveyard value engine while the activated ability turns excess graveyard cards into repeatable removal. Win by reanimating fatties or grinding the table out with card advantage and recursion.

Strengths

  • Built-in card selection every upkeep that filters to the best of three—better than a raw draw and immune to draw-step hate
  • Actively stocks your graveyard, enabling reanimation, flashback, escape, and delve payoffs for free
  • Repeatable creature removal that doubles as a graveyard outlet to clear clutter
  • Color identity gives access to the best tutors, counterspells, and reanimation in the format

Weaknesses

  • Graveyard hate (Bojuka Bog, Rest in Peace, Leyline of the Void) cripples both the engine and removal
  • Five mana and no immediate board impact—he's an engine, not a threat
  • The -X/-X ability competes with reanimation for graveyard resources, creating tension
  • Skipping your draw step punishes you if Taigam is removed and you have no other card advantage

Key Cards

  • Reanimate — Cheap reanimation that turns the creatures Taigam mills into immediate board presence.
  • Animate Dead — Reliably returns the bombs you self-mill, the core payoff of the graveyard engine.
  • Entomb — Tutors your best reanimation target straight into the yard for Taigam to capitalize on.
  • Jace, Wielder of Mysteries — Turns your self-mill into a clean win-the-game alt condition when your library empties.
  • Eternal Witness — Recurs the spells that fall into your graveyard, multiplying Taigam's value.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays the lands Taigam mills, turning dead cards into recurring resources.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual) and cheap reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead, Necromancy) so you cheat threats out years ahead of curve. Lean into tutors—Entomb, Buried Alive, Vampiric Tutor—to assemble a reanimator package, and run Lab Maniac/Jace plus a self-mill enabler as a compact backup combo. Protect the engine with counterspells and graveyard-hate insurance like Bojuka Bog and Soul-Guide Lantern of your own.

  • ▸Lock the board with repeatable -X/-X removal while a value engine closes the game

Archetypes

  • Graveyard Value/Midrange — Self-mill feeds flashback, escape, delve, and recursion to grind out card advantage.
  • Control — UB counters and the repeatable -X/-X removal let you control the board while building toward inevitability.
