The Commander

Whenever a source you control deals noncombat damage to a creature equal to that creature's toughness, draw a card.

{X}, {T}: If a source you control would deal noncombat damage to a permanent or player this turn, it deals that much damage plus X instead.

Guide

Gameplan

Taii Wakeen turns your direct-damage spells and pingers into a card-advantage and removal engine. Use the second ability to pump up burn so it can lethally hit creatures (rewarding you with a card) or be scaled into a finisher against players. Build a board of repeatable damage sources and X-spells, then ping efficiently while refilling your hand.

Strengths

  • Excellent removal value: precise damage equal to toughness draws a card, so killing creatures replaces itself
  • Scales burn spells with the {X} ability to snipe big threats or close out players
  • Cheap two-mana commander that immediately impacts the board
  • RW gives strong burn, pingers, and damage-doublers

Weaknesses

  • The first ability requires hitting exactly toughness, which can be awkward without the damage-boost ability online
  • Relies on noncombat damage sources—if your engine pieces are removed you stall
  • Tapping Taii each turn limits how often you can boost and uses mana
  • Vulnerable to lifegain and damage-prevention strategies
  • X ability only affects one source's first instance of damage that turn unless you spread it carefully

  • Heartfire Hero — A cheap repeatable damage outlet, though more importantly RW is full of pingers that pair with Taii's draw trigger.
  • Spikeshot Goblin — A repeatable, firebreathing pinger that deals damage equal to its power—perfect for matching toughness and drawing cards.
  • Cunning Sparkmage — Untapping pinger that, with Taii, snipes a creature and draws while killing it.
  • Torbran, Thane of Red Fell — Boosts all your red noncombat damage, helping sources reach exact toughness and pushing burn lethal.
  • Fiery Emancipation — Triples damage, turning small pings into massive blasts that overshoot or finish players.
  • Walking Ballista — A repeatable, scalable damage source that can be tuned to exact toughness for card draw.
  • Pyrohemia — Repeatable board-wide pinging that can trigger Taii's draw multiple times in a turn.
  • Goblin Sharpshooter — Untaps whenever a creature dies, chaining pings into a draw-and-kill engine.

Upgrade Path

Add damage multipliers (Torbran, Fiery Emancipation, Furnace of Rath) and efficient repeatable pingers to maximize both triggers. Include X-burn (Comet Storm, Fireball) and untap engines to enable lethal turns, and tighten the mana with fast rocks and rituals so you can both pump and ping in the same turn. Cut narrow combat creatures for more noncombat damage sources and protection like Deflecting Swat to defend your engine.

  • Combo — Untapping pingers like Goblin Sharpshooter plus damage-doublers can loop to draw and burn everyone out.
