The Commander

Trample

Whenever Tana deals combat damage to a player, create that many 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens.

Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)

Guide

Gameplan

Tana wants to connect with a player to spawn a wave of Saproling tokens, then either go wide for a big swing or feed an aristocrats/sacrifice engine. You build her up just enough to hit hard once, snowball into a token army, and close with overrun effects or sacrifice payoffs. Her Partner slot lets you pick a second commander to plug holes—card draw, a sac outlet, or another beater.

Strengths

  • Snowballs into a huge token army off a single profitable swing
  • Trample makes her hard to chump and guarantees damage gets through for tokens
  • Partner gives deckbuilding flexibility and a second commander to abuse
  • Saprolings synergize with both go-wide and aristocrats payoffs

Weaknesses

  • Tokens only come from combat damage, so she's blank if she can't connect
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase the whole Saproling army
  • Needs evasion or pump to break through blockers and get the trigger online
  • Gruul lacks reliable card draw and interaction without good partner support

Key Cards

  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Turns a wide Saproling board into instant lethal trample damage.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles the Saproling tokens Tana makes for an explosive board.
  • Skullclamp — Sacrificing 1/1 Saprolings to draw two cards each is the best engine in the deck.
  • Rogue's Passage — Grants unblockable to guarantee Tana's combat damage and a fresh wave of tokens.
  • Parallel Lives — Another doubler that turns one connection into a flood of bodies.
  • Tendershoot Dryad — Floods the board with Saprolings and anthems your entire token army.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable evasion (Rogue's Passage, trample/pump auras) and token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) to maximize each hit. Lean into a sacrifice subtheme with Skullclamp, Blood Artist effects, and free sac outlets to keep value flowing even through wipes. Choose a Partner that fixes Gruul's weaknesses—Tymna the Weaver for draw, Ikra Shidiqi for lifegain/cards, or Reyhan for counter synergy.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Overrun-style finisher with a wide Saproling board
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat and a sacrifice outlet
  • ▸Combat damage snowball pushing repeated lethal trample swings

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Tana mass-produces Saprolings on combat, fueling go-wide anthem and overrun strategies.
  • Aristocrats — The endless stream of 1/1 tokens is perfect fodder for sacrifice and drain engines.
  • Voltron-lite — Pumping and giving Tana evasion maximizes the number of tokens per swing.
  • +1/+1 Counters / Stompy — Gruul beatdown with token support and big-creature payoffs.
