BuildCard details

The Commander

{2}, {T}: Create a token that's a copy of up to one target artifact token you control. Mill two cards.

{1}{W}{U}{B}, {T}, Sacrifice two artifact tokens, Exile an artifact or creature card from your graveyard: Create a token that's a copy of the exiled card, except it's an artifact in addition to its other types. Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Flood the board with artifact tokens (Treasures, Clues, Food, Servos, Thopters), then use Tawnos's first ability to copy your best token while milling toward fuel for the second ability, which reanimates any artifact or creature from your graveyard as an artifact token copy. You grind value early and explosively cheat out bombs mid-game, closing with wide attacks or recursive copies of game-ending creatures.

Strengths

  • Two distinct value engines on a cheap 2-mana commander that's hard to answer permanently
  • Self-mill plus the reanimation ability turns the graveyard into a recurring toolbox
  • Esper colors give access to the deepest artifact, token, and recursion support
  • Token copying scales explosively with any token doubler or untap effect
  • Repeatedly creating copies dodges 'dies'/exile removal and refills after board wipes

Weaknesses

  • Tap abilities make Tawnos slow and vulnerable to summoning sickness, tapping effects, and removal
  • The second ability is sorcery-speed and demands two artifact tokens plus a graveyard target every activation
  • Relies on a critical mass of token generators; clunky if you draw the engine without enablers
  • Three-color manabase with a {1}{W}{U}{B} activation cost can be color-intensive
  • Graveyard hate shuts off half the commander's value

Key Cards

  • Anointed Procession — Doubles every token you make, supercharging both Tawnos's copy ability and your token fodder.
  • Academy Manufactor — Turns Treasure/Clue/Food generation into a triple-token avalanche of artifact fuel.
  • Thopter Assembly — Reanimate it as an artifact token for a recurring stream of Thopters that feed the sacrifice cost.
  • Sharding Sphinx — Each artifact token attacking spawns more Thopters, snowballing a token army into a kill.
  • Brudiclad, Telchar Engineer — Copies your best token across the whole board, weaponizing Tawnos's copy ability into lethal swings.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure tokens off creature deaths to fuel both abilities and ramp into reanimation.

Upgrade Path

Add token doublers (Anointed Procession, Mondrak), untappers (Thousand-Year Elixir, Magewright's Stone) to break Tawnos's tap symbol, and an Academy Manufactor package for explosive token output. Lean into a reanimation toolbox of high-impact artifact creatures plus Reanimate/Entomb-style setup, and tighten the manabase with Esper duals and fast mana. For a combo finish, include untap loops or Brudiclad to convert your token mass into a single decisive turn.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Going wide with copied tokens and overrunning the table via anthems or Sharding Sphinx Thopters
  • ▸Reanimating a powerful artifact creature (e.g. Wurmcoil Engine or Combustible Gearhulk) repeatedly for inevitability
  • ▸Infinite-token or infinite-mana combos enabled by untap effects and token doublers
  • ▸Brudiclad-style mass token transformation into a single lethal alpha strike

Archetypes

  • Artifact Tokens — Tawnos directly copies artifact tokens and rewards a board full of Treasures, Clues, Servos, and Thopters.
  • Reanimator — The second ability cheats artifacts and creatures back from the graveyard as artifact token copies.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrificing artifact tokens for value pairs naturally with death-trigger payoffs in Esper colors.
  • Combo — Token copying plus untappers and doublers can generate infinite tokens or value loops.
