BuildCard details

The Commander

Each other creature you control enters with an additional vigilance counter on it.

{3}, Remove three counters from among creatures you control: Mill three cards, then return a permanent card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Guide

Gameplan

Tayam turns counters into a recursion engine: load creatures with +1/+1 or vigilance counters, then repeatedly activate to mill yourself and reanimate low-cost permanents, looping value creatures and enchantments into a grindy, inevitable advantage. You spend early turns building a counter-rich board, then chain Tayam activations to recur sacrifice fodder, ramp, and disruption until you assemble a combo or simply bury the table in resurrected permanents.

Strengths

  • Self-sustaining recursion engine that's hard to disrupt outside removing Tayam
  • Counter synergy plus built-in vigilance counters fuel both activations and combat
  • Abian-Junji-style loops and aristocrats payoffs make for resilient combo lines
  • Mills yourself as a feature, fueling graveyard returns rather than hurting you
  • Deep Abzan card pool with strong ramp, recursion, and toolbox creatures

Weaknesses

  • Activation requires Tayam on the battlefield—heavily commander-dependent
  • Costs counters, so removal of your creatures starves the engine
  • Mana-hungry: {3} per activation adds up without cost reduction
  • Slow to set up; vulnerable to fast combo or aggressive starts
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts down the whole strategy

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Doubles counter placement so creatures enter loaded, letting you activate Tayam far more often.
  • Abzan Falconer — Turns your pile of counters into evasive flyers and a backup payoff for the counter theme.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Showers your board in counters every time a creature enters, exploding Tayam's activation count.
  • Walking Ballista — Cheap MV permanent you can recur with Tayam to ping the table and act as removal.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet and mana engine that enables infinite loops with recurred creatures.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles counters from any source, supercharging activations and ETB counter effects.

Upgrade Path

Add counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, Kalonian Hydra) and proliferate to multiply activations, then build toward a deterministic combo with Ashnod's Altar plus a recurrable creature and a drain payoff like Blood Artist. Improve the mana base and ramp (Sakura-Tribe Elder, signets, Arcane Signet) so you can activate Tayam multiple times per turn, and include protection like Heroic Intervention and Swords to Plowshares to defend the engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite loops with Ashnod's Altar plus a recurred creature draining via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Walking Ballista or aristocrat triggers pinging all opponents to death
  • ▸Going wide with counter payoffs like Abzan Falconer and Cathars' Crusade for lethal swings
  • ▸Grindy attrition—out-valuing the table until they have no answers

Archetypes

  • Counters/Recursion Combo — Tayam converts counters into repeated reanimation, the core engine for value loops.
  • Aristocrats — Recurred fodder plus sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar drain the table with death triggers.
  • +1/+1 Counters Midrange — Counter doublers and proliferate feed both Tayam's cost and a wide, growing board.
  • Reanimator — Mill-and-return turns Tayam into a low-cost recursion loop for permanents.
