BuildCard details

The Commander

Tetsuo Umezawa can't be the target of Aura spells.

{U}{B}{B}{R}, {T}: Destroy target tapped or blocking creature.

Guide

Gameplan

Tetsuo is a Grixis control deck that grinds the game out with removal, card advantage, and incremental value before closing with a few powerful threats or a combo. His repeatable activated ability picks off attackers and blockers, but it's expensive and situational, so the deck leans on Grixis staples for the heavy lifting while Tetsuo serves as a backup removal engine and respectable beater.

Strengths

  • Access to the best removal, counterspells, and card draw in the format via Grixis colors
  • Repeatable creature removal from the command zone that pressures attackers and blockers
  • Hard to deal with via Auras (Pacifism effects) and decent body for chip damage
  • Flexible game plan—can pivot between control, reanimator, and spellslinger

Weaknesses

  • The ability costs four mana and a tap, and only hits tapped or blocking creatures—poor against untapped threats and planeswalkers
  • No green means weak ramp and no enchantment removal
  • Tetsuo himself is fragile and not a fast clock
  • Three colors strain the mana base and invite commander damage by being a small body

Key Cards

  • Cyclonic Rift — Premier blue reset that clears blockers and lets Tetsuo or your threats push through unopposed.
  • Rhystic Study — Engine card draw that keeps a controlling Grixis deck stocked through a long game.
  • Necropotence — Black's best card-advantage engine to refuel after spending resources on removal and counters.
  • Dockside Extortionist — Explosive ramp to power out expensive spells and repeatedly fuel Tetsuo's costly ability.
  • Notion Thief — Punishes draw spells while turning your card-draw engines and opponents' wheels into card advantage.
  • Cruel Tutor — Color-appropriate tutoring to assemble combos or find answers in a grindy control shell.

Upgrade Path

Lean into a tight control shell with fast mana (Mana Crypt, Jeweled Lotus), the best counterspells, and a compact combo finish since Tetsuo's ability is too slow to be a primary plan. Add efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your win, and prioritize a clean three-color mana base with duals, fetches, and fast rocks. Treat Tetsuo as a value piece and removal backup rather than the centerpiece, and let proactive blue-black combos or reanimation close games.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Resolve an oppressive control state then win with a big reanimated or hard-cast finisher
  • ▸Combo kill via Thassa's Oracle / Demonic Consultation or similar Grixis lines
  • ▸Grind opponents out of resources and beat down with evasive threats while Tetsuo clears blockers

Archetypes

  • Control — Grixis gives access to top-tier counterspells, removal, and card draw, with Tetsuo as a recurring removal valve.
  • Spellslinger — His instant/sorcery-heavy color identity supports a cantrip-and-burn shell with payoffs like Young Pyromancer and Talrand.
  • Reanimator — Black and blue let you cheat big threats into play to close games Tetsuo can't on his own.
  • Combo — Grixis hosts compact two-card combos (e.g., Thassa's Oracle lines) protected by counter magic.
