BuildCard details

The Commander

Flying

Whenever Teval attacks, mill three cards. Then you may return a land card from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

Whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard, create a 2/2 black Zombie Druid creature token.

Guide

Gameplan

Teval turns your graveyard into a token engine: mill yourself to fill the yard, then trigger cards leaving your graveyard (reanimation, flashback, escape, recursion) to spit out 2/2 Zombie Druids each time. Attack to mill three and ramp lands back, while building a wide board that you eventually pump or sacrifice for value. You win by going wide with Zombies, grinding inevitability through recursion, or assembling a graveyard-based combo.

Strengths

  • Each graveyard-leaving event makes a Zombie, so self-mill becomes board presence and ramp simultaneously
  • Sultai colors give the best mill, recursion, and reanimation tools plus card advantage
  • Teval ramps lands from the yard on attack, fueling expensive payoffs
  • Resilient and grindy—graveyard recursion makes you very hard to run out of resources

Weaknesses

  • Heavy reliance on graveyard makes it extremely vulnerable to exile-based hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog)
  • Wants Teval connecting in combat, which can be slow and removal-prone
  • Token swarm is fragile to board wipes if you overcommit
  • Many synergy pieces are low-impact in a vacuum, risking a clunky draw

Key Cards

  • Splendid Reclamation — Returns every land from your graveyard at once, exploding mana and triggering Teval to make a Zombie.
  • World Shaper — On death it dumps lands into play and pairs with self-mill, while its leaving the yard fuels Teval.
  • Eternal Witness — Returning cards from the yard repeatedly triggers Teval's Zombie maker and rebuys your best spells.
  • Muldrotha, the Gravetide — Lets you recur permanents from the yard every turn, generating constant leaves-the-graveyard triggers.
  • Altar of Dementia — Sacrifice your Zombie tokens to mill yourself or kill opponents, looping with recursion for a win.
  • Stitcher's Supplier — Cheap, repeatable self-mill that fills the yard for Teval and reanimation targets.

Upgrade Path

Add more cheap repeatable self-mill (Stitcher's Supplier, Hedron Crab, Mesmeric Orb) and efficient recursion that triggers Teval multiple times per turn. Lean into a dedicated win condition—either Altar of Dementia mill loops, an Overrun-style finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth, or a reanimation toolbox with big payoffs. Round out with graveyard-hate protection and fast mana to deploy Teval and protect your engine.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overrun a wide Zombie board with an anthem or Overrun-style finisher
  • ▸Mill opponents out with Altar of Dementia plus recursion loops
  • ▸Reanimate a game-ending threat or assemble a graveyard combo
  • ▸Drain the table via aristocrats payoffs feeding on Zombie tokens

Archetypes

  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Every card leaving your graveyard makes a 2/2 Zombie, so recursion-heavy turns flood the board.
  • Reanimator — Sultai colors and constant self-mill let you cheat huge threats back while triggering Teval.
  • Lands / Ramp — Teval and effects like Splendid Reclamation recur lands for explosive mana and value.
  • Aristocrats — Endless Zombie tokens feed sacrifice outlets and drain engines.
