Royal Guard — When Thancred Waters enters, another target legendary permanent you control gains indestructible for as long as you control Thancred Waters.

Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, Thancred Waters gains indestructible until end of turn.

Gameplan

Thancred is a mono-white protection piece that shields your most important legendary permanent (another commander in a pile of legends, a key planeswalker, or a board-anchoring artifact/creature) with permanent indestructible while staying alive himself through noncreature-spell casting. You build a critical mass of legendary permanents and value engines, protect the linchpin, and grind out the game with white's superior board control and go-wide closers. Flash lets you deploy him reactively, holding up interaction and dropping the indestructible blanket at the perfect moment.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, no-cost indestructible for a key legend dodges board wipes and targeted removal
  • Flash gives flexibility—hold up answers, then deploy at instant speed
  • Self-protecting against most spot removal whenever you cast instants/artifacts/enchantments
  • Mono-white means consistent mana and access to the format's best stax, taxes, and wraths

Weaknesses

  • Indestructible doesn't stop exile, bounce, -X/-X, edicts, or sacrifice effects
  • The Royal Guard trigger only protects one legend, and it lapses if Thancred dies or leaves
  • Mono-white's classic struggles with card advantage and ramp
  • Effect is reactive/defensive and provides no inevitability on its own
  • Needs other legendary permanents to fully exploit the protection clause

Key Cards

  • Teferi's Protection — Phases out your board to dodge what indestructible can't, the ultimate backup to Thancred's shield.
  • Smothering Tithe — Solves mono-white's mana and card-advantage problems while being a noncreature spell that triggers Thancred.
  • Heliod, Sun-Crowned — A legendary lifegain engine worth making indestructible, and it combos into infinite life/damage with lifelink sources.
  • Akroma's Will — Flexible noncreature finisher that grants the whole team protection or evasion, triggering Thancred while closing the game.
  • Swords to Plowshares — Premier white removal that pings Thancred's indestructible trigger while answering threats indestructible can't help against.
  • Esper Sentinel — A legendary-adjacent staple for card draw; pair with cheap noncreature spells to keep Thancred safe every turn.

Upgrade Path

Lean into fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crest, Smothering Tithe) and cheap noncreature spells to reliably keep Thancred indestructible every turn. Add a compact combo line such as Heliod + Walking Ballista or a Voltron package with Swiftfoot Boots-style hexproof so removal must contend with both protection and indestructible. Round out with the best mono-white interaction and a few exile-proof finishers, since indestructible alone won't carry you against committed control decks.
