The Commander

Vigilance, haste

{T}: Target opponent whose turn it is puts target nonlegendary creature card from your graveyard onto the battlefield under their control. It gains haste. Goad it. At the beginning of the next end step, exile it. (Until your next turn, that creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than you if able.)

Guide

Gameplan

This is a Jund graveyard/politics deck that weaponizes your own dead creatures against the table. Each opponent's turn, tap The Beamtown Bullies to drop a fat nonlegendary beater from your yard onto a chosen opponent's board, goaded and hasted, so it swings at someone else before being exiled at their end step. You fill your graveyard early, then loop these temporary gifts to shape combat, kill players for you, and drain the table with aristocrats payoffs while building your own board.

Strengths

  • Cheap (4 mana), evasive, and immediately online with vigilance and haste
  • Reanimates anything from your yard for free, repeatedly, using creatures you've already 'spent'
  • Goad turns gifted creatures into removal aimed at other opponents—political pressure without spending your own attackers
  • Discourages targeting you since you make the table fight; great in multiplayer
  • Synergizes hard with aristocrats: gifted beaters die in combat and trigger your drain effects

Weaknesses

  • Ability only works on an opponent's turn, so it's slow, telegraphed, and easy to play around
  • Temporarily hands creatures (and any beneficial ETBs/buffs) to opponents
  • Only one activation per opponent's turn unless you add untappers
  • Completely dependent on a stocked graveyard—folds to Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog, and exile removal
  • Killing the commander shuts the whole engine off and it has no built-in protection

Key Cards

  • Blood Artist — Gifted creatures dying in combat trigger it regardless of who controls them, converting goad damage into table-wide drain.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat — Redundant Blood Artist effect that turns every traded-off gift into life loss and your own life gain.
  • Bastion of Remembrance — An enchantment copy of the Blood Artist effect that's hard to remove and keeps the drain engine running.
  • Buried Alive — Instantly stocks your graveyard with the exact beaters you want to gift, no looting required.
  • Entomb — One-mana tutor to put your best nonlegendary bomb straight into the yard for the Bullies to fling.
  • Thousand-Year Elixir — Untaps the Bullies so you can gift multiple creatures across a turn cycle and chain combat blowouts.
  • Disrupt Decorum — Mass goad amplifies your strategy, turning every gifted and existing creature into a forced attacker against others.
  • Massacre Wurm — A nasty nonlegendary body whose downside punishes the opponent you hand it to (and any of their tokens).

Upgrade Path

Tighten the manabase and add fast graveyard fillers (Faithless Looting, Stitcher's Supplier, Grisly Salvage) plus tutors like Victimize and Final Parting so you always have the right beater to gift. Lean into the aristocrats package with more Blood Artist redundancy (Cruel Celebrant, Elas il-Kor) and untappers (Magewright's Stone, Intruder Alarm) to gift multiple creatures per turn cycle. Top-end nonlegendary bombs with punishing or evasive bodies (Massacre Wurm, Noxious Gearhulk, Bane of Progress) turn the gift ability into flexible removal and reach.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Gifted creatures trade in combat and die, triggering Blood Artist–style drain that wins through incremental life loss.
  • Politics / Group Slug — Goaded reanimated beaters force opponents to attack each other while you sit safe behind vigilance.
  • Reanimator — The Bullies recur huge nonlegendary threats from the yard for free, just temporarily and under someone else's control.
  • Control (via combat) — Hand a giant deathtouch or evasive creature to the weakest player to assassinate a threatening opponent on demand.
