The Commander

When you cast this spell, gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap it. It gains menace and haste until end of turn.

The Beast enters tapped with six stun counters on it. (If it would become untapped, remove a stun counter from it instead.)

Whenever a creature deals combat damage to its owner, untap The Beast and draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast The Beast to temporarily steal an opponent's best creature, give it menace and haste, and swing it back into its owner. Combat damage to a creature's owner removes a stun counter and draws you a card, so you chain theft, sacrifice, and goad effects to dig The Beast online while grinding the table down. Once unstunned, The Beast becomes a recurring attacker and engine in a deck full of disruptive removal and value.

Strengths

  • Casting trigger steals a creature every time you recast from the command zone, providing repeatable removal/value and a free attacker
  • Built-in card draw whenever any creature damages its owner rewards goad, theft, and forced-combat synergies
  • Hard to keep dead permanently—recasting reuses the steal-and-swing engine
  • Menace + haste on the stolen creature makes it hard to block and lets you immediately attack

Weaknesses

  • Enters with six stun counters, so it's effectively inert until you force lots of owner-directed combat damage
  • The steal is only until end of turn—without sacrifice or fling outlets the creature returns
  • Vulnerable to board wipes and exile-based removal that strip your engine
  • Slow to come online if opponents lack creatures or play defensively
  • Heavy reliance on combat damage means flyers, fog effects, and stax pieces hamper the draw engine

Key Cards

  • Goblin Bombardment — Sacrifice the creature you stole before it returns, turning Act-of-Treason value into permanent removal and a damage source.
  • Disrupt Decorum — Goads every opponent's board so creatures crash into their owners, stripping stun counters and drawing you cards en masse.
  • Marchesa, the Black Rose — Dethrone plus undying-style recursion pairs with the monarch/combat theme and keeps stolen creatures around.
  • Fervor — Haste anthem ensures every threat—and freshly recast Beast—can attack immediately to trigger draws.
  • Bedevil — Flexible BR removal that protects The Beast's engine and answers the biggest threats on the table.
  • Kardur, Doomscourge — Forces creatures to attack you and pings on death, both feeding owner-directed damage and value.

Upgrade Path

Add more reliable sacrifice and fling outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Fling, Goblin Bombardment) so every steal becomes permanent value, and lean into goad/forced-combat engines (Disrupt Decorum, Kardur, Frenzied Saddlebrute) to strip stun counters fast. Round out with efficient BR removal and recursion (Bedevil, Feldon, Marchesa) plus haste enablers, and tighten the mana base with fast rocks and dual lands to recast The Beast aggressively after each removal.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Beating down with The Beast and stolen creatures bolstered by menace and haste
  • ▸Sacrificing hijacked creatures to Goblin Bombardment or similar fling outlets for direct damage
  • ▸Out-grinding the table on cards via the owner-damage draw trigger until you overwhelm them
  • ▸Goad-fueled swings that let opponents kill each other while you draw into a finisher

Archetypes

  • Theft / Steal — The cast trigger repeatedly hijacks the best creature on the board, and sacrifice outlets keep your stolen prizes.
  • Goad / Forced Combat — Pushing opposing creatures to attack their owners removes stun counters and refills your hand.
  • Aristocrats — Sac outlets convert borrowed creatures into removal, damage, and recursion loops.
  • Aggro Midrange — Menace, haste, and a steady stream of recast attackers let you race and grind simultaneously.
