The Commander

Peaceful Coexistence — At the beginning of your end step, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control that didn't attack or enter this turn. Untap those creatures.

Guide

Gameplan

The Fifth Doctor is a UW counters-control commander that rewards patience: keep creatures home and each end step they grow and untap, building an ever-larger, always-available board. You play defense and value behind tappers, mana producers, and utility creatures, then convert the accumulated counters into a single decisive swing or counter-based payoff. The untap clause also lets your creatures block freely and re-use tap abilities every turn.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable +1/+1 counters every turn with zero card investment
  • Untapping makes creatures double as attackers and blockers (pseudo-vigilance) and reuses tap abilities
  • UW gives premium control tools: counterspells, board wipes you can survive, and protection
  • Synergizes heavily with proliferate and counter payoffs for explosive scaling
  • Pairs with a Doctor's companion for a second commander and extra value

Weaknesses

  • The counter trigger is slow and only pays off if you can afford to not attack, which is awkward against aggro
  • Creature-light or go-wide token decks get little from the per-creature buff
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your accumulated counters
  • UW lacks ramp and card-draw depth compared to other color pairs
  • Needs the commander to stick; removal resets your engine entirely

Key Cards

  • Inspiring Call — Draws a card per creature with a counter and protects your grown board from a wipe at instant speed.
  • Doubling Season — Doubles every end-step counter, turning the slow buff into a runaway threat.
  • Hardened Scales — Cheap multiplier that makes each Peaceful Coexistence trigger meaningfully larger.
  • Icy Manipulator — The untap clause refreshes tap-based control pieces so you can lock down threats every turn.
  • Branching Evolution — Another counter doubler that scales the whole board with each end step.
  • The Ozraeli Diplomat — A strong Doctor's companion option to fill the partner slot and add value.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Stacks even more counters as creatures enter, compounding with the Doctor's untapping engine.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your counter-laden army from removal and wraths for one mana.

Upgrade Path

Lean into counter multipliers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, Hardened Scales) and proliferate sources to make the slow engine snowball faster, and add protection like Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection to defend against wraths. Sharpen the control suite with efficient counterspells and value tappers whose untap matters, and pick a Doctor's companion that advances the counters or control plan. To push power further, add fast mana (Sol Ring, signets), strong card advantage, and a compact combo finish so you aren't purely relying on combat math."}

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overrun the table with an oversized, always-untapped board after several growth turns
  • ▸Voltron a counter-stacked evasive creature with anthem and trample effects
  • ▸Counter-doubler combos (Doubling Season-style) snowballing into a lethal swing
  • ▸Grind out the game with control and incremental counter advantage until opponents run out of resources

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — The end-step trigger naturally builds counters that doublers and proliferate payoffs amplify.
  • Control — UW counterspells and wraths let you stall while the Doctor grows untapped blockers each turn.
  • Stax/Tappers — Untapping tap-down creatures like pingers and lockdown pieces every end step enables repeatable control.
  • Voltron — Counters pile onto a single evasive creature for a fast, protected one-shot kill.
