The Commander

You may look at the top card of your library any time.

Would You Like A...? — Once each turn, you may play a historic land or cast a historic spell from the top of your library. When you do, create a Food token. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

Gameplan

Pair The Fourth Doctor with a Doctor's companion partner and grind incremental advantage by playing historic cards (artifacts, legendaries, Sagas) off the top of your library every turn for free Food. You bend your draws with scry/Sneak-style top-deck control, snowball mana and card advantage from the top, then convert the long game into a value or combo finish before opponents stabilize.

Strengths

  • Generates an extra card from the top of your library every turn, effectively turning into a free historic spell each turn
  • Top-of-library visibility makes scry, surveil, and top-deck tutors enormously powerful
  • Food tokens fuel lifegain, sacrifice, and artifact synergies as a built-in side resource
  • Deep blue card selection plus green ramp keeps the engine fueled and consistent
  • Loves a legendary/artifact-heavy build, so commanders, Planeswalkers, and equipment all 'count'

Weaknesses

  • Only one historic play per turn off the top, so non-historic cards stall the engine
  • Value-oriented and grindy; can be outraced by fast combo or aggressive decks
  • Needs top-deck setup (scry/surveil) to avoid being stuck on bad cards
  • No built-in protection, and losing the Doctor stalls the whole engine
  • GU lacks efficient removal and sweepers, leaving you behind on board presence

  • Sensei's Divining Top — Lets you rearrange the top of your library at will to guarantee a great historic play and refill draws.
  • Brainstorm — Stacks your top three cards so you cast the best historic spell off the top every turn.
  • Mystic Confluence — A historic-irrelevant but flexible control piece that protects the engine while you grind.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — Turns Food lifegain and a high spell count into a lethal life-drain finisher.
  • The Reality Chip — A legendary artifact that also lets you play lands off the top, doubling down on top-deck card advantage.
  • Trade Routes — Smooths land drops and loops, helping you bin or replay cards to set up the top.

Upgrade Path

Lean hard into top-deck manipulation—add Sensei's Divining Top, Scroll Rack, Soothsaying, and fetchlands to control your draws and never waste the once-per-turn play. Skew your spell base heavily toward historic cards (mana rocks, legends, Sagas) so the engine always fires, and add fast mana like Mana Crypt and Sol Ring plus a clean combo finish (Aetherflux Reservoir, Food loops with Cauldron Familiar/Witch's Oven) to close before grindier games run long.

  • ▸A big legendary or Planeswalker board going wide/tall for combat damage

  • Artifacts/Historic Value — Nearly every artifact and legend is historic, so they cast off the top and make Food while you snowball.
  • Topdeck Control — Top-of-library access pairs with scry/surveil and Brainstorm effects to manufacture the perfect draw each turn.
  • Food/Lifegain — Each free historic play makes a Food, enabling sacrifice payoffs, lifegain engines, and Cauldron Familiar loops.
  • Superfriends/Legends Matter — Planeswalkers and legendary creatures are historic, letting a value board build itself off the top of your deck.
