The Commander

First strike

Whenever The Ghoul or another nontoken Zombie or Mutant you control dies, target player gets two rad counters. If that player is you, create a Treasure token.

Guide

Gameplan

The Ghoul is a mono-black aristocrats/sacrifice deck that profits whenever your Zombies and Mutants die. Each death hands out two rad counters, which mill the target and drain life on their next main phase, while pointing them at yourself nets a Treasure to ramp into bigger threats and reanimation. You grind value through sacrifice loops, dump your graveyard with rads, and reanimate or close out with drain payoffs.

Strengths

  • Repeatable rad counters provide incremental mill/life loss across the table for free
  • Treasure generation from self-targeting accelerates mana and graveyard fueling
  • First strike makes a cheap 3-mana commander a relevant attacker and blocker
  • Deep mono-black tutor, recursion, and sacrifice support
  • Rad counters synergize beautifully with self-mill reanimator strategies

Weaknesses

  • Damage output via rads is slow and easily out-paced by faster combo or aggro decks
  • Relies on a steady stream of nontoken Zombie/Mutant deaths to keep value flowing
  • No built-in evasion or protection beyond first strike
  • Mono-black means weak interaction against enchantments and resilient artifacts
  • Self-milling rads can accidentally bin key cards if undisciplined

Key Cards

  • Gravecrawler — Endlessly recurs as a nontoken Zombie to repeat death triggers and rad counters with a sac outlet.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that turns Zombie deaths into mana and infinite loops with recursive creatures.
  • Viscera Seer — Cheap, repeatable sacrifice outlet to convert every Zombie into a death trigger on demand.
  • Grave Pact — Multiplies each Zombie death into edicts, attrition, and stacked rad triggers across the table.
  • Gisa and Geralf — Generates and recurs Zombies from your graveyard, feeding the death engine and capitalizing on self-mill.
  • Pitiless Plunderer — Adds Treasure to every nontoken death, stacking with The Ghoul's own Treasure generation for explosive ramp.

Upgrade Path

Add free sacrifice outlets (Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar) and recursive bodies (Gravecrawler, Reassembling Skeleton) to build deterministic death loops, then pair with Blood Artist effects to convert loops into wins. Tighten the mana with fast rocks and dual lands, and lean into reanimation packages (Reanimate, Animate Dead) that exploit the self-mill from your own rad counters. Cut slow, fair Zombies for engines and tutors like Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Intent to assemble combos faster.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Infinite sacrifice loop draining or milling each opponent out with rad counters
  • ▸Classic aristocrats drain payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat
  • ▸Reanimating large threats off a graveyard stocked by self-mill rads
  • ▸Going wide with Zombie tokens and overrunning with anthem or finisher effects

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Death triggers from Zombies and Mutants fuel rad counters and Treasures, rewarding sacrifice loops.
  • Reanimator — Self-targeting rad counters fill your graveyard, enabling cheap reanimation of bombs.
  • Zombie Tribal — The trigger keys off nontoken Zombies, so a wide undead board maximizes value.
  • Combo — Recursive Zombies plus free sac outlets enable infinite death loops for unbounded rads or drain.
