The Commander

Guide

Gameplan

The Lady of the Mountain is a Gruul beatdown commander that ramps into big Giants and other high-power creatures, then turns wide stats into card advantage and lethal swings. Spend the early turns ramping and dropping efficient fatties, deploy the Lady on turn five or six, and use her to convert combat into more gas. You close games by overwhelming the board with trampling, oversized threats faster than control decks can stabilize.

Strengths

  • Access to the best ramp and the biggest, most efficient creatures in the format (Gruul stompy)
  • Naturally generates card advantage off high-power creatures, fighting the typical aggro problem of running out of gas
  • Resilient to spot removal because threats are cheap to redeploy and replace
  • Can pivot between Giants tribal and a generic big-creatures shell

Weaknesses

  • Folds to board wipes if overcommitted, and Gruul has weak ways to rebuild instantly
  • Almost no interaction with opposing combos or instant-speed answers
  • Struggles against flyers, fog effects, and pillow-fort/Stax pieces that blunt attacks
  • Six mana means the Lady can arrive late and is vulnerable before she impacts the board

Key Cards

  • Craterhoof Behemoth — Turns a board of big creatures into an immediate, trampling alpha-strike kill.
  • Garruk's Uprising — Gives your fatties trample and refills your hand whenever a high-power creature enters, mirroring the deck's plan.
  • Rishkar's Expertise — Draws an absurd number of cards off a single big creature and lets you chain a free spell.
  • Pathbreaker Ibex — A repeatable overrun effect that scales with your largest creature for surprise lethal.
  • Xenagos, God of Revels — Doubles power and grants haste, pushing the Lady or any fatty into one-shot range.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Mana Crypt) plus premium ramp (Cultivate, Three Visits, Nature's Lore) to land threats a turn or two ahead. Lean on recovery from sweepers with Heroic Intervention and recursion like Bala Ged Recovery, and prioritize evergreen finishers—Craterhoof Behemoth, Triumph of the Hordes, and Return of the Wildspeaker—so every big board converts to a kill. Tighten the curve and cut clunky vanilla Giants for ones that draw cards or end games to raise consistency.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a Craterhoof Behemoth or Pathbreaker Ibex overrun
  • ▸Connecting with one massive trampling threat doubled by Xenagos for commander/lethal damage
  • ▸Grinding card advantage off high-power payoffs until you simply out-resource and outsize the table

Archetypes

  • Gruul Stompy — Her color identity and high mana value lean into ramping out oversized threats and swinging.
  • Giants Tribal — As a Giant she headlines a tribal build with lords, payoffs, and recursion for big bodies.
  • Power Matters / +1 Aggro — Her stats and Gruul's high-power payoffs reward going tall with single huge threats.
  • Tokens-into-Anthem Beatdown — Wide boards convert into lethal alpha strikes with overrun effects she supports.
