BuildCard details

The Commander

Rapid Regeneration — The Swarmlord enters with two +1/+1 counters on it for each time you've cast your commander from the command zone this game.

Xenos Cunning — Whenever a creature you control with a counter on it dies, draw a card.

Guide

Gameplan

Build a wide, counter-laden Tyranid swarm that turns every death into card advantage via Xenos Cunning, then bury opponents under tokens and +1/+1 counter synergies. Early turns ramp and deploy counter-generating creatures; mid-game The Swarmlord enters bigger each recast, refueling your hand as your board trades or sacrifices into removal.

Strengths

  • Built-in, repeatable card draw engine that makes combat trades and sacrifice strictly beneficial
  • Commander grows huge on each recast thanks to two +1/+1 counters per prior cast
  • Temur colors give access to elite ramp, counters, tokens, and proliferate payoffs
  • Synergy with both go-wide token strategies and +1/+1 counter midrange

Weaknesses

  • Card draw only triggers on death, so passive boards with no counters stall the engine
  • Relies on getting counters onto creatures before they die to maximize value
  • No evasion or protection baked in—The Swarmlord can be chump-blocked or removed
  • Board wipes hurt, though they do refund cards if your creatures have counters

Key Cards

  • Hardened Scales — Doubles incoming counters, making every creature a bigger draw and combat threat.
  • Branching Evolution — Multiplies all +1/+1 counters, supercharging both your board and Xenos Cunning eligibility.
  • Pir, Imaginative Rascal — Adds an extra counter to anything getting them, ensuring more creatures qualify for the draw trigger.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Loads counters onto your whole team as you go wide, so every death draws a card.
  • Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that converts counter-bearing creatures into mana and cards.
  • Old One Eye — A recursive Tyranid bringing back your best counter creatures to die again for value.

Upgrade Path

Add proliferate engines (Evolution Sage, Doubling Season) and stronger counter doublers to make every trigger lethal-adjacent. Tighten the sacrifice package with free outlets (Viscera Seer, Goblin Bombardment) and drain payoffs (Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist) so deaths win the game, not just draw cards. Improve mana with fast rocks and ramp so you can recast The Swarmlord repeatedly and refill on demand.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelming alpha strike with a wide, counter-pumped board
  • ▸Recasting a massive Swarmlord for commander damage beatdown
  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist effects while drawing through your deck
  • ▸Grinding out opponents with relentless card advantage and recursion

Archetypes

  • +1/+1 Counters — Xenos Cunning rewards every creature carrying a counter, and the commander scales on its own counters.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Pairing counter anthems like Cathars' Crusade with token makers turns a board into a draw engine.
  • Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus counters mean each sacrificed creature draws cards and fuels payoffs.
  • Tribal Tyranids — Warhammer Tyranid synergies and counters fit the swarm theme natively.
